If you read my 1st response...i said that the behaviour the OP has outlined is typical of TVL & why i dont bother paying one myself personally.....they huff & puff for payment but thats about it.
One of the easiest "taxes" to avoid paying altogether in my view.

Yup, I pay monthly by direct debit and the first 6 months of the year pay for that year and the second 6 months for the year after. Check with them since now you have paid the first year your payments should halve. If you rang them and explained you wished to come off the installments they would probably let you, since you are covered until the end of the year but then they would expect the full payment in January. I find it easier just to pay throughout the year then at least I can budget for it.

What I have done is we pay the 6 months for that years then cancel the direct debit. They will write and moan, but just ignore them. You then get a letter confirming the expiry date of the licence. When this expires just sign up for direct debits again and pay that years over 6 months. This does mean you only spread the amount over 6 months, but it does mean they never get your money miles ahead of time.

Done this regularly with no problems, but there are many who never pay the licence and all they get are the old threat o grams and eventually a visit. As long as you don't sign or admit anything and don't let them in the house there is nothing they can do.

Like debt collectors they work on the priciple that 99% of people will pay up under "threats".
The TV vans appear to be fakes and there aren't that many of them anyway.

Personnally I pay up because I am the nervous type and obey the law even when I believe its wrong, but I do object to the way TVL present themselves as some sort of powerful body with "government" style powers.

If you need a TV licence and currently do not have one then you are breaking the law. You should not be promoting this as advice to anyone as it could land them in court.

mr.ton seems to have a problem with paying things if you read through his other posts he comes across very aggressive and in your face but i suppose if that is what works for him it is his choice, but should not be promoting his actions to others

Just had an email from TVL saying they can't help, and I should just to contact the card issuing company with queries about payments.

It's all too hard for me to take in. They just seem like they couldn't care less.

Alibobsy - that makes most sense to me. Pay for what you need for a licence for that year and then pay again when the licence expires.

Where did the idea that depriving folk of cash up front and sending shouty reminders a good policy when cards are supposedly meant to help the less wealthy budget sensibly.

I've paid the licence and they've said I'm covered till Jan 31st 2011, so I'm not breaking the law. That's the main concern.
  • I dislike the TV licence company as they assume the whole world MUST watch TV - both my parents and Hubby&I went many years without one as we didn't watch it. They tried to take my parents to court (yes, they do catch up with you if you don't pay, it's just a shame they catch up with those who don't need to pay too) but after hearing my parents (truthful) testimony realised that they had no case - yes my parents had a set, but they didn't use it for watching TV. My parents still don't have one, and they still don't need it.

With us, we spent the first 4 years of our married life getting threatening letters from the TV licence company, threatening fines, court, etc, but not giving us a chance to explain - when they FINALLY included a telephone number (for us to pay with) I rang them up and explained that threatening letters were no good when we had no need to pay - the guy on the other end sounded totally like he didn't believe me at all and said someone would be round to check on us (guilty until proven innocent in their mind, methinks). However, shortly afterwards we bought a new tv set which automatically tunes and is very hard to de-tune (this is the only proof a person can have that they don't watch tv) so we bit the bullet and got our first tv licence on Chistmas day 08, just in time for Dr Who :)

After consulting our Martin, we chose the monthly DD of £12.12 as it seemed to be the cheapest and the best way to budget, been paying that from the off and still doing so, so as far as I'm concerned, we pay each month as it comes, and screw the bad men who like to intimidate and assume.

No idea if that helps you, but felt the overwhelming urge to rant at the TV licence people and show that there are honest people who don't pay, and honest people who do, too.
