OH has his toast cold as well, tis the stuff of nightmares.

Straight out the grill whilst it will still burn your fingers, spread with Mayo, I don't like butter/spread/marg.

Nothing to add as to how you get it rubbery, apart from OH stand his up, he reckons it sweats if you lay it down.

I think the degree of "chewyness" comes from the type of bread - 11p value loaf or whatever the B&B uses will always be chewy, even if burnt, whilst my loaves toast beautifully:D

Wet/dry comes from not using a toastrack to let steam escape, or letting steam escape properly.

  • Ohhh i love my toast cold and chewy.I usually leave it standing in the toaster for quite a while before i decide to eat it or another way is to pop it in the freezer for a little while.

And it's the ultimate SIN to butter a slice of toast with a serrated knife - has to be a nice straight edged knife otherwise you scrape half the piece of toast away in crumbs!!
  • our toast always comes from the canteen looking like something you'd use to plug a serious leak, but it is surprisingly tasty. I think how they accomplish this is to do a whole loaf at once, pile the slices up then when someone comes for toast, and only then, you marg it up. cold cheap toast with a smattering of cheaper margerine, washed down with a brew made from your teabag but someone else's milk. Crack on- keep your shreddedwheat!

How come we all like cold chewy toast? Are we all mums? Probably because we are all running round like mad 'things' every morning getting the family organised while they ate breakfast and cold chewy toast was all that was left. Never did like waste! Well, I think thats how I developed a taste for it.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

  • I do like wet chewy toast but I don't think you can beat home made crusty bread, sliced not too thickly, toasted slowly on the grill and buttered when hot. Also, toast done on the George Foreman is lovely too!!

  • I'm afraid I have to say you're all freaks.

Hot toast is where its at, preferably doorstop white with slightly salted butter. (Lots of it.)

  • When my old Mum ran a Cafe she toasted one side of a couple of loaves worth and left it stacked up, then when toast was ordered it was a quick grilling of one side only. I remember it as being particularly ghastly but at 10p a slice what do you expect???
