Price Match today (but it was yesterday too) in John Lewis - various items

John Lewis are doing a price match against competitors - you can save ie 20% off certain brands of lingerie or shoes (Dune amongst others) and say 10% off beauty products.

It's throughout the store so will be on glassware etc and you have to search for the brands/discounts.

No idea when it ends or even if this is just ongoing.

    The actual 'slogan' is 'Never Knowingly Undersold' which does put a different slant on your comment.

    Yes, it makes their price-match policy even more of a joke.
    The extra word is just a disclaimer, a legal get-out clause ;)
    They just refuse (a price-match) whenever they choose.

    Personally, I've never had any problems getting a price-match at John Lewis. I bought a new Sony TV from there earlier this year, that I had seen for a great price at Richer Sounds. (RS price £459 - price at JL/Dixons/Currys/Comet - all the same at £529)
    JL reduced their price without any quibble by £70, and I got their 5 year (JL) guarantee too.

    Never ever considered buying electrical items from JL in the past - always used the 'specialists' (Dixons Group/Comet et al) - now I tend to do my homework first and then go to JL - and get a FAR superior service.

    The 'knowingly' is grossly misleading, to say the least - they know full well they're being undersold every day of the week in stores across the UK. They just prefer to turn a blind eye. Even if you tell them about an undersale, they'll match the price for you (sometimes after a bit of a struggle) but they very rarely drop the price in the stores.

    I like John Lewis. I buy a lot of stuff there. But the 'never knowingly undersold' policy is grossly exaggerated to make customers think John Lewis sells at low prices. Sometimes it does, but for the most part it doesn't.

    I mostly haggle when I'm buying stuff and I mostly do some homework on what I'm buying too.

    I frequently ask the retailers and sales staff if people are like me and haggle when they are buying things.

    From the answers I get, apparently, people like me are very much in the minority. I think that's how the big retail stores work. They rely on impulse buying.

    As a good example of this, just look to see how many people actually use a Shopping List when they go to the supermarket. There aren't all that many at all. I don't use one either. Sometimes my wife does jot a few things down as a memory aid to make sure we don't forget some of our rarer necessities but that's about it.

    So we have a situation where 'impulse buying' and a 'lack of haggling' are just about completely the normal way shopping works in this country.

    I think, for some people, haggling is 'beneath them'. Others are just embarrassed to do it just in case they mess up and make a fool of themselves.

    Perhaps John Lewis relies on these phenomena for the majority of its business?

    They do provide much better Warranties for TVs and such like and, by reknown, they also do give the shopper an excellent and 'very civilised' buying experience and also excellent after sales service.
