in Cutting tax
All,
I think I have to fill a tax return for the past year.
The problem is I have never done one and I have not received the form from HMRC, how do i go about doing it?
I tried to do it online today but dont have the bloody UTR number.
Can someone tell me what to do?

If you haven't received a form, then just phone your tax office, or the general enquiries line in the phonebook, & request one. If you want them to work out your tax for you then you should have returned it by the end of this month, otherwise you may need to do a lot of calculations yourself. You should also be able to get your UTR sent out to you, possibly even given to you verbally if you know which is your tax office, however I think you need to register to file on-line & that didn't used to be an immediate process, they still had to send through a PIN, though that may have changed.0

Why do you think you need to complete a tax return? If it's just because you're a higher rate taxpayer and you have dividends and interest to declare, or you want to complete Higher rate Gift Aid relief then you just need a one page form instead of the whole tax return, and the end-September deadline for getting the Revnue to calculate your under/overpayment doesn't apply.0

I need one because I have received a benefit in kind from my employer (interest free loan).
I just called my Tax office and they said I dont need to send one even when I told him that I had a free loan.
My employer says that I need to fill one.
I am a bit stuck here, I think I am going to download a blank tax return and send it to the tax office and let them deal with it.
Many thanks.0 -
When did you get the loan?
Was it on your P11D? If it's not, you don't need to fill in a tax return.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -

yes it is on my P11D.
I got the loan during last year (does it really matter when I got it?)
so you think in this case that i don't have to fill a tax return?
what would happen if I fill a blank one and send it to my tax office, will they disregard it?0 -
If it's on your P11D then I believe it's taxed at source and you don't need to complete a tax return. (Any sign of it on your payslips as a taxable benefit?)0

If you send them a blank tax return they'll probably think you're a bit of a nutter and cart you off in a white coat!
You'll also miss the self-assessment deadline now for getting the revenue to do the calcs for you0 -

what I meant by blank one, is downoading one from their website and fillining in the figures from the P11D and sending it back without the the UTR.0 -

This is not correct ...it will only have been taxed at source via your tax code if HMRC were actually told about your loan..I am guessing this has not yet happened. You do not need to fill in a tax return - all you need to do is send your tax office your P11d along with a covering letter explaining about the beneficial loan. The taxable amount will be shown on the P11d - a calculation will be made and any tax underpaid will be collected via your tax code commencing April 2007 (unless you want to pay it off..if so ask for a voluntary payment slip).I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes

You don't need to send you P11d, your employer does that.
If it was on your P11d then HMRC will decide if you need to fill in a tax return.
The P11d provides the information that HMRC requires. Have they amended this year's tax code taking this into account?
Tax Returns are normally only required if you have tax-deductible employment expenses, un-taxed income, un-taxed savings or savings taxed at the wrong rate.
You only need to request a tax return yourself if you think you have undeclared income or expense.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
