Options
Hi i am new to money saingand after reading loads of the posts on here it seems that lots of you buy food / household stuff in bulk.

What sort of stuff do you buy in bulk and where they best places to hget it.
Do all cash and carries open to the public? or are some just trade.

I live near Leeeds/ Bradford in west yorkshire.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

  • I use booker

I borrowed a card from a friend who rang the church youth group

After a while, I wrote a letter to the manager with details of spend and got one of my own

If you pay in cash, they don't notice who you are

It is now down as a personal youth club

Although I have a Makro card which is a trade warehouse. You can buy in bulk from supermarkets too. Or what I call bulk anyway.

For example 9 rolls of loo roll instead of 4
Buy one get one free items
24 bags of crisps instead of 6
Frozen chicken fillets or fish fillets in bags of 9
Tesco's do 5% of 6 bottles of wine
  • Hi Pinkparrott, I see your in my neck of the woods and not too far away.

For my meat I go to C & J Ives, Blue hills farm shop at Birkenshaw Bradford, just off chain bar roundabout M62. Their meat tastes yummy and is reared on the farm and the prices are goods, for example, 2 x whole ducks £6, 2 x corn fed chickens £5, ham shanks £1, turkey leg £1, big fat beef joint £9. You can also get all the usual stuff too, rabbits are in this week which I may have to buy. The phone number is 01274 682007 if you want to ring for directions from where you are. I go at the begining of the month and buy what I need from my meal plan and freeze.

I visit the local market for my fruit and get a bag full for about a fiver. I also get my fresh fish from here.

All other stuff from Asda but buy large packs/multi packs like 24 loo rolls, big box washing powder, 3 for the price of 2 that sort of thing. The only cleaning stuff I buy are washing up liquid, Stardrops and bleach.

I find the only downside to buying larger quanties is you have to have room to store and several freezers and do your meal plan on a monthly basis so you don't overspend. I spend around £200 per month for 4 of us.

  • Hi
thanks for your post Icemaiden, I will have to try to get to that farm shop.
I actually live the other side of bradford but know where birkenshaw is as I used to work in cleckheaton.
The corn fed chicken sounds a real bargin, I love them but have been buying them from sainsburys recently but they are expensive their £5-6+ for one to feed 4.
Does the farm shop sell other stuff? or just meat- Which market do you go to. Have you been to the meat and fish market in bradford? is it any good as I go back to work next month in bradford.
    thanks

I bulk buy at Costco. We have a trade card as my H has his own business.
I tried initially to get a personal card (its more expensive but H was faffing getting paperwork together for it to be in his company) but I still had to say who I worked for and my empoyer wasnt n their list. I dont understand why this made a differende to a personal application but there you go.

Anyway I go once a month or so and get whatever we need out of:
    nappies
    loo roll
    kitchen roll
    Ragu pasta sauce
    tinned tomatoes
    rice
    baby wipes

    Thats about it!

  • Hi pinkparrott, sorry for not getting back to you sooner,

Yes, they do sell a few other thing but have only tried the meat.

I tend to go to Huddersfield market as its nearest to me but in the past have been to Bradford but not often as hubbies has the car during the day so I have to rely on public transport:eek: , I know a few people who go and swear by it. Meat packs for about £10.

Can't answer your question about costco nappies but I used to buy a large box from the supermarket or boots sometimes have 3 for 2 offers.

Just to add about buying a slow cooker(from your other thread)I got mine last year from Asda, its nearly exactly the same as the Morphy Richards one, digital, chrome & black, oval crock pot, large(4.5 ltrs i think) and only paid £19.99 as the MR one is about £35. I notice they were back in stock again you should be able to get one at the large store just off sticker Lane in bradford or even the walmart pudsey store which is good for bulk buys as its really big but has alot of offers.

Hope that helps, anything else just shout.

We don't have much storage space so the only thing we tend to buy in bulk is rice, tinned tomatoes and fruit juices.

Rice we get in the 10 kg bags from Tesco or an asian grocer - this way good-quality Tilda Basmati is a fraction of the price per 100g when compared with the little packets.

Tinned tomatoes and fruit juice come from Lidl - we buy a couple of trays at a time.
