Lappy can't install updates

Hi can someone help please.
When my son tries to shutdown his laptop it tries to down load 3 updates, but it goes on & on for ages, evenually he has to try to shut it down using ctrl-alt-del, then a message comes up on a blue screne saying "S3 gnbm.SYS" page-fault-in-nonpaged area.
