This says it all really - any private sector database which took 72 hours to update and the company would soon be insolvent.
When you submit a change of address online, you also have to provide other information to enable HMRC to verify, as best as they can, that it is actually you that's changing your own address.
If the address updated immediately, everyone's identity would probably have been stolen by now.
I also want to add to this thread that everyone in the country is having a complete heart attack over what's going on with P800s, but have failed to realise that THIS PROCESS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR GOD KNOWS HOW MANY YEARS. THIS IS JUST THE FIRST YEAR THAT THE PROCESS IS AUTOMATED. CALCULATIONS WERE PREVIOUSLY DONE MANUALLY BY HMRC STAFF.0 -
This thread mentions Extra Statutory Concession A19 but has anyone heard of ESC B41
''
B41. Claims to repayment of tax[FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman][FONT=Times New Roman,Times New Roman]Under the Taxes Management Act, unless a longer or shorter period is prescribed, no statutory claim for relief is allowed unless it is made within 6 years from the end of the tax year to which it relates. However, repayments of tax will be made in respect of claims made outside the statutory time limit where an over-payment of tax has arisen because of an error by the Inland Revenue or another Government Department, and where there is no dispute or doubt as to the facts.''
May be of interest to someone.

What does 'gigo' mean harryhound? Have I upset you?
No offence taken or intended:
GIGO is just a common computer acronym for garbage in garbage out.
It goes with the likes of wysiwyg (wizzy wig): what you see is what you get.
xxxxx.jpg (a file of the joint photographic group) a picture know as a "Jay Peg".
The tax system is a classic example of how NOT to introduce a computer system. We have known since the 1960's that the technique is to analyse, eliminate, simplify and only then automate.(KISS: keep it simple stupid).
Unfortunately the political imperative was to introduce more and more stealth tax complexity, to avoid the sheeple realising what was happening.
What we have now is computerised chaos administered by front line muppets.
God forbid that we go ahead to the proposal that was floating about a year or so ago, that everyone's pay should be routed via HMRC before we get it, so they can keep the tax right.
This afternoon I bumped into one of my neighbours (a self employed owner driver of a lorry) and observed that I had just cycled to the local post box to send a letter to the tax man. I got a good rant about people on salaries in offices, who fail to realise that taking time off to go to our local "tax advice" centre costs him serious amounts of money, especially now that the economy appears to be recovering at last.0 -
''to avoid the sheeple realising what was happening.''

Unlike the statute of limitations that applies to the rest of us this statement never was true. It was 5 years and 10 months to give the clerks 2 months in which to hit their 6 year target.
The 5 years and 10 months is in the process of being reduced.

Correcting your tax return and claiming any refund0 -
My bloke, who still works for HMRC, was telling me about this reduction in time limits and I told him he was talking cr*p. How can this be when the Limitation Act clearly states 6 years? Do you know what legislation/regulations introduced this?
I must apologise to him in the morning.0 -
Sorry I don't know the contents of the taxes act - presumably it says "we make the rules";
though I still smart about the time I rushed to get 6 years of corrections done before the end of a March and sent them off only to get the oldest one completely disregarded because it was out of time - that cost about 400 GBP.
I recently got a small sum of money popping up on my bank account.
Eventually I worked out it had come from HMRC so I telephoned and eventually after blundering about in their system found someone who explained what it was a SA refund.
ME "I did not know what it was - can you pop your calculation in the post to me?"
HMRC "Can't you work it out yourself - the file has gone to archive".
ME "Yes I suppose I could"
Well my calculation suggested that I owed them a small amount of money - so as the difference is less than 300 GBP I guess I can keep it now.:T0 -
I'll tell you my story - I was dismissed in 2005 because I have a disability (yes I know its unlawful and I'm taking my case the the Euro Court of Human Rights) and when I was dismissed I received compensation of two years salary but the excess over 30000 was taxed. On the basis that the compensation was paid because of a disability I reclaimed the tax deducted on my self assessment return - about £3000 and then advised HMRC's solicitor of what I had done. Guess what - although I expected a battle never heard a word from them on the subject.0
-
Now then , I've just opened a letter from HMRC wanting me to confirm my details - NI number, D o B, last addresses etc and I notice my NI number on their letter is missing the last letter................should I be worried?0
