Stolen Goods - Ethical...?

Morning all,

A topic for discussion - for you all.

Do you agree with buying stolen goods?

....or do you think the people who buy stolen goods are just as bad as the people who steal them???

I certainly wouldn't buy something I knew to be stolen - just as I would not like it if I discovered someone bought something of mine and they knew it rightfully belonged to someone else.

Am I right in thinking that you do not get ownership of an item if you buy it when it is stolen i.e. if the police discover you have it, it will be given back the the original owner? Rightfully so, but it must be a bummer if you buy something in good faith to have it taken away.
  • If you ever get burgled, you'll realise what a stupid question you're asking.
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way.

sorry - But you are WRONG.

My home has been burgled and it was horrible.

Please note this post it not about me or what I think is right or wrong. It's something I wanted other peoples views and opinions on.

    hear hear

Also if you are caught with stolen goods even if you bought in good faith you could be charged with handling stolen goods.

Are you buying stolen goods from the supermarket as farmers say that the supermarkets are guilty of day light robbery ;)

I would never knowingly buy stolen goods, but sometimes you have to wonder where some of the stuff on ebay comes from...

I just pop in now and then.... :)

    Hi shinds,

This is certainly a topic worth discussing, but it might be better to continue it on the discussion time board.

In 'theory'......I can't believe that anyone (with any morals!) would "KNOWINGLY" buy stolen goods.

I can't think of ANY valid reasons to support a decision to buy such goods.

Of course, there is ALWAYS the chance of 'un-knowingly' buying stolen goods, whether buying off of E-bay, from your local free-ads paper, or from a friend,

Having said that....I refer you to my opening words...'in theory'...

'In practice'.....how many of you have copied a CD? Copied a film? etc.etc.
Not 'quite' the same thing as buying a 'stolen good' but is effectively the same thing. Since you are obtaining (ie. buying for free!) something which is an illegal copy, then you are effectively 'stealing' that item.

Having copied a CD myself (who hasn't?) I cannot claim any moral highground over anyone else. However, I would still not buy any (physical) goods that I know have been stolen.

(Thinking about it I find myself in a conflict of morals here....)

    Cheers,
    Don
