Sainsbury's Offers - check your receipt

Went to Sainsburys to stock up on all their halfprice offers: ribena, ham, emmentaal and cheddar cheese, right guard deodorant, listerine mouthwash, head&shoulders, hellemans mayo, Walkers crisps 18pack, taste the difference new potatoes - all half price. Plus a dozen Woodland medium free range eggs £2.

They have done their usual trick of stacking items that appear similar WITH the items on special offer. Today it was the Own brand Organic Farmhouse mature cheese. Note it is only the Organic FARMHOUSE mature cheese that is on offer at £2.16. The Organic mature cheese, in exactly the same packaging but without the word FARMHOUSE on it was stacked behind and next to it at £3.39. I have been caught out by them so many times with this sneaky method that I always check my receipt before I leave the store these days.

  • Totally agree with checking things at Sainsburys. Did our last shop there on Saturday and there were several things that I saw around the store which were incorrectly placed or an item was out of stock on shelf so something else was in there instead. Very sneaky. I also check my receipt very carefully every time as they show offers at the end mostly but sometimes in the bill too and I have been owed money a few times when things have not gone through correctly.

Morrisons do this too, especially with their own brand products.

They only use the letter "M" to distinguish their own brand products on shelf labels. So, for example, a shelf label for their own brand bread will just say "M Bread 50p". But what is on the shelf is not always Morrisons bread, often it is another brand costing a lot more.

They rely on people not noticing, or realising the significance of the letter M.

its not done on purpose, its down to the member of staff filling up and not looking at the product he has and whats on the shelf, its not a sneaky method at all,

ive worked at JS and it did happen and not that i did it but i knew people who did and they were the ones who didnt work on fresh who mixed items up

Sorry but I just do not believe you, I've pointed out to staff in Morrisons that they are putting the wrong product on the shelf and they have replied that that is what they were told to put on that shelf.

I've pointed out to managers that the price on the shelf does not match the product on the shelf more times than I can remember, and not one of them was ever changed.

I can accept that a shelf stacker can make a mistake, but I know when that mistake is pointed out it is never put right.

I don't believe they are mistakes either. Supermarkets have got form for using devious tactics so I am convinced it is being done on purpose.
It is probably the brainchild of some spotty little twerp fresh out of Uni, feeling rather pleased with themselves that they are smarter than everybody else(or so they think).
  • I too agree its not a mistake. Its a regular event at my Morrisons that they fill the empty off space with full price items that are almost indentical.
I still occasionaly get caught out and have to queue at CS despite being on the look out for it.
Really annoying whenelder parents go shopping because they struggle to notice and end up paying more.

Bit unfair of those of us recently out of uni!

To be honest it's more likely that it's probably an overpaid strategy consultant who has been brought in to conduct a pricing review and create new 'processes' that result in more revenue without any more marketing spend.

Voila, trick people into buying a more expensive product. More revenue, bigger profit margins.
