PUBS CUT PINT PRICE FOR GUIDE
DRINKERS will get a bonus this week as pubs cut prices for the Good Pub Guide's 25th anniversary.
Many pubs mentioned in the guide are to revert to prices from 1982, the year it first hit bookshops.
Beer drinkers can get a pint for 62p as the real-ale drinkers' bible publishes its 25th edition on Thursday.
Beer prices will drop from an average of £2.33 a pint and meals, such as scampi and chips, will be on offer for around £2.
Guide editor Alistair Aird said: "If price changes in the next 25 years reflect those of our first quarter of a century, the national average beer price will be £8.40 a pint."
There are around 60,000 pubs in the UK and 2660 have had main entries in the guide at some point.
Only 66 - one in 1000 - have appeared as a main entry in every edition.
Among them is Burts Hotel inMelrose, Roxburghshire. Winners of the Good Pub Guide's national awards will also be announced on Thursday.
Aird came up with the idea of the guide after researchers at his magazine Holiday Which? complained that they had no easy reference book for good pubs in the UK.
He took a year off to compile the book, much of which was written on a portable typewriter in his car.
It was originally intended as a one-off but became an annual publication which Aird has written every year since.

Celebration day!The Britannia Inn, The Lake District's finest hotel and pub
The Britannia is the quintessential English Lakeland Inn. Nestled in the centre of the picturesque village of Elterwater amidst the imposing mountains of the Langdale Valley, The Britannia offers a sanctuary away from hectic daily life with ales and foods to satisfy all tastes.
The building is over 400 years old, starting life as a gentleman farmers residence before becoming a coaching inn. So its rooms are small and cosy, with slate walls feet thick, oak beamed low ceilings and olde worlde atmosphere.
Set in the very heart of the Lake District, with Wordsworth's Grasmere ten minutes over the hill, Ambleside and Lake Windermere only three miles away and Hawkshead and Coniston just a short distance further. In every direction from our front door, there are glorious walks and mountain bike trails
Visit us on Thursday 28th September to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Good Pub Guide. The Britannia has appeared in this guide every year and to mark the occasion we're offering two real ales and house wines by the glass at 1982 prices! That's 65 pence a pint and 80 pence for a glass of wine.
These prices will be on offer on Coniston Brewery's Bluebird and Jennings' Bitter all day on the 28th. The house wines included in the offer are Pierre Javert red, dry white and medium white.
In addition, around 9.30pm we will be featuring a FREE firework display in front of the Inn (weather permitting).0 -
