Hair dye diaster - please help

At the beginning of the summer I had my highlights redone, I started colouring my hair at my salon for the first time ever about 2 years ago, each time I have gone a lighter shade, due to a change in circumstances, I can nolonger afford to keep going back to get my colours done.
Growing the blond out made my hair look awful, so I did a perm kit at home myself, picking a colour that was closer to my natural dull brown colour or so I thought! After following the instructions my hair has gone a really dark brown, whilst it looks very healthy and shiny and covered all my blond and a few grey hairs it is to be honest to dark for me!
So my first question is can I strip the colour out without an expensive visit to to salon, which defeats the object of money saving. I live in a really rural area so no hairdressing colleges in the area.
If I can't strip the colour out at home can I dye it again picking a much lighter brown? If so when can I do this, I dyed my hair this morning, so when would it be safe to do without damaging hair. Don't want to wake up tomorrow and be bald, lol!
As it is now proper dark brown will it even go a light brown with a home colouring kit - I used a l'oerial (sp) that was £7 ish, the most expensive range that my local Sainsburys keeps.
My hair grows so slowly that it will take ages to grow and will look hideous.
Thanks in advance for your help :-)

I woudnt try dying it yet. Leave it for at least a week, try washing it with vosene everyday as the more you wash it the more the colour will start coming out. You could always try a wash in colour to lighten it until you are able to recolour again. You never know you might get use to the colour after a couple of days. It probably seems darker than what you think because you have gone from blonde to brown. Try putting different make up and see what you think aswell.

Thanks Elvis1, I have just popped out and did put some make up on, and I do look better, the dark brown really highlights my dark circles under my eyes, nice!
Will bare with it though, I was my hair everyday so hopefully over the weeks it will settle down!0 -
This might sound odd but it worked for me last time I dyed my hair too dark. As a temporary fixer, apply a light layer of fake tan to darken your skin slightly and your hair won't look nearly as bad. Then rather than redying your hair, wash and condition it every day to fade the colour and within a week or two you should be fine.0

Try rubbing warm olive oil into hair and wash with Vosene shampoo or Head and Shoulders0
