where do i stand with hours of work

I normally do 33.5 hours a week at work, i was off with stress about 6 weeks ago, when i spoke to the director about returning, i said i would do 9 til 3 with half hour lunch for the foreseeable future, with half hour lunch, this totals 27.5 hours. during this time i have ended up staying later. this week i have given proposals to go back up to 32 hours, but i have changed the way i work my hours round so i am able to collect my boys from school 3 days a week, if my employer says no to this where do i stand ?

    If your request is rejected then you can ask again in a year's time.

    As well as putting in the request to work different hours, did you deal with possible objections (like the office not being covered for all the time required)?
  • The office will be covered. does it make any difference as i have been off with work related stress? Also, the last document i signed regarding hours was before i verbally agreed to the 33.5.?

    Probably not very well - but you have no right to change your hours so if the employer does not agree then you do your normal hours or you leave. Having a few weeks off due to stress makes no difference.

    You have a right to ask for different hours and they have a right to refuse your request.

    Either doing what your employer wants or signing on the dole. You can ask, they can refuse. Your being off with stress has no relevance.

    if the issue is childcare you can do a flexible qorking request - your employer has to then prove they have considered it. if they reject it you can go through the appeals process.

    look on the direct gov website about flexible working and parents at work. its gives advice how to apply for this.
    would love to be a home owner. hate private renting
    scared of debt. almost debt free.

    That's really helpful, the main issues i have for wanting to change the hours of work are childcare and , having more balance to my family life for my boys, as the Job is still making me stressed , and i find it hard not to bring the stress home with me. I feel by re arranging mu hours, and cutting an hour and a half a week, it will improve my motivation for work, still waiting to see what they say .
  • if you ask and are refused you are entitled to a full explanation of why
    whilst it is true that they can refuse you can appeal
    they have to look at does it work for them an the buisness they run from what you have said i can not see a problem but depends on how helpfull they want to be
