I am thinking of making a hamper up, a mixture of things she likes. Like nice soaps, a HM chocolate cake, maybe a small bottle of champagne (anyone know of a nice cheap one??) some homemade truffles.

Or bottle of bucks fizz - gives the same 'I'm spoiling you' type message without the cost!
7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers

It might be worthwhile asking her what she woudl like.

My grandma was very ungracious about getting pressies. Nothin was ever right, no matter what. BUt she was really chuffed the year we asked her what she wanted: a new washing up bowl!

    You may be surprised!

Sparkling Chardonnay is closer to a champagne taste I found than Cava. It costs from £4. a bottle.

Shell, the trouble with the elderly is they don't beat around the bush with their comments. They don't mean to be hurtful, but as you rightly say if your girls were to hear any negative remarks about the present they gave her, they would be upset. Even when I ask my parents what they would like for birthday/Christmas they say "there's nothing we need, just get a card." Oh yeah? Guess who would be disowned if I did that? One day, just one day!!!
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I know it is so tempting. In fact last year we did suggest they just buy pressies for the girls and we not bother - that went down like a lead balloon! The reason from MIL Christmas is about giving/receiving presents, and there was me thinking it was about peace on earth and gods only son being born! LOL.

Think DH should of had a government "weird family" warning stuck to him.
