Have been told to use this because of the MRSA and will need to use it for 6 months after we are "decolonised"(which can't happen till I heal totally from the operation, but was wondering if there is anything else out there as we get through a lot of it (the bath/sink/shower has to be cleaned with it in between each person using it to avoid infection).

Make up a bleach spray in a plant mister bottle - I think you'll need about 1 part bleach to 9 parts water, and use liberally. You won't have any problems with black mould either :rotfl:
For washing hands, normal soap is antibacterial - learn how to wash your hands thoroughly and use a scrubbing brush. Scrubbing is great as you're using mechanical action to help break down bacterial cell walls. Also make sure you keep your towels clean - no point making your hands lovely and clean only to reinfect them on a manky old handtowel.
Hope your operation isn't too serious and that you have a quick and infection-free recovery.0 -

I was going to suggest using kitchen roll as a disposable alternative to towels for drying hands
Oh and how about coal tar soap (very OS!)....definitely cheaper than antibacterial soapsI like to live in cloud cuckoo land :hello:0 -
I use dettol antibac bars of soap which seem to last forever,in hospital and when we get home.
I also bought one of the handsfree sensor pumps from argos for using after the toilet its brilliant as it only dispenses enough for a good wash therefore cuts down on the amount used
I can usually find carex antibac somewhere on offer to refill it too.
I usually stock up on very cheap kitchen roll for the first few days home so I wipe hands on that then throw in the bin,no worries of cross contamination.
I also cut up a couple of bath sheets into flannel size peices and overlocked them so we had loads of washcloths for boiling after.
(our hospital also give us the pack of washcloths/wipes we are using to take home as they are only incinerated after if they're opened already)
I managed to find really cheap antibac sprays in wilkinsons not sure if they still do them..I bought 40 bottles :rotfl:
I also bought some brilliant handgel packs from ebay that have a clip on to hang round your neck on a lanyard or clip on a belt/bag etc for hospital and at home
HTH we're in every 3 months or so for ops any help you need just give us a shout best wishes for your op!0 -
Thanks all-just to clarify I have had my op 10 days ago to drain a 4cm(long) by 2cm(wide) by 4cm(deep) abcess but it's not healing too well and until it does we can't use the special washes and stuff to get rid of the MRSA.With 6 kids we'd use 2 rolls of kitchen roll a day so I'll stick to the towels. Will have a look in Wilko's for cheap antibac stuff.Haven't seen the dettol soap so will look for that. The coal tar soap is a good idea-will it kill germs though? What is zoflora?Debts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

Hi TMD
Google brings up this for Zoflora
I can honestly say I know what you're going through with the absess. I had one drained and was kept in hospital for two weeks it was so bad:eek:! Uncomfortable and horrible and i wish you a speedy recovery
There is an older thread discussing Antibacterial handwash . It has some really good suggestions , so have a read and I'll merge this later once you have more input.
Can i just reiterate the follwing about medical advice - just being cautious and covering my own back - no offence meant to anyone
Martin’s asked me to post this: Sorry, giving or asking for medical advice is not permitted on this forum as it’s not what this site is about. While discussing medical insurance policies, cheaper ways to see consultants, cashback for alternative health treatments and how to get specific medication cheaper (legally) are all perfectly acceptable we ask you specifically not to discuss what to do in the event of certain medical problems (please see this rule on the Health Board). If you have any questions about this policy please email
thanks

Traditional Coal tar soap is the original antibacterial soap - however the EU has banned coal tar in non-prescription products and therefore any "coal tar" soap you see now won't be the real thing, but instead just normal soap made to look like coal tar.
Zoflora is a disinfectant made to smell nice. However my normal disinfectant is just old-style Dettol - the brown stuff in the clear bottle, not any of their new fangled stuff. You can make up solutions as per the bottle directions but it's not the nicest smelling.0 -

Zoflora is an antibacterial disinfectant and the website claims it is effective against MRSA. The packaging says to dilute to 1 in 40 with water so it should last a while. I've found it in Wilkinsons, BodyCare and supermarkets for about £1 for 120ml.
I hope your recovery is going well0
