How to claim under Direct Debit Gurantee?

What are the magic words to say to your bank to get a refund under the Direct Debit Gurantee.

Sky have overcharged me.

When I had this problem before, the bank said it would take a few days as they would need to talk with Sky?

I thought refunds were immediate under the gurantee?

  • Hi

If you go to your bank and ask for an indemnity claim, the bank will refund you instantly and they will then claim the money back from sky.

It is then up to sky to resolve the issue with yourself.

There's information on this website: http://www.bacs.co.uk/BPSL/directdebit/generalpublic/yourrights/

    Taken from that site:

If an error is made by the organisation or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your branch of the amount paid.

If any payment is made in error, you should contact your bank or building society who are responsible for giving you a full and immediate refund - even if the original error was made by the organisation collecting the payment.

  • Yes, if the company has made an error with your payment, your bank must refund you. However 'immediate' refund, does not mean that the bank will credit your account instantly when you contact them as they do need to process the relevant paperwork. I don't know who you bank with, but I happen to know that Barclays take around 24hrs to credit your account back.
