Need some ideas for keeping track.

Hi folks.

I need some ideas to help keep track of my financial situation. At the moment I have got excel spreadsheets and I am finding them a right pain in the butt to be honest.

i am a web developer, so for me, I will be building my own application. I have this basic excel spreadsheet, 2 columns, payments and spendings. etc. thats great but it gets quite messy when working between sheets.

So I am looking to build an easy way to log my spendings, whats going where etc etc and just build my a nice report of how much I suck with money.

I am only in the "wow this is an idea phase" at the moment, I just wondered you could help me with any ideas? Or more importantly, are there any features you would like to see or have the abiliity to do?

Some basic ideas so far.
  • Import CSV file from bank (HSBC)
  • option to add more credit cards/loans etc
  • Add repeat payments to save readding same payments in each month
  • build graphs
  • automatically add new months to list
  • build reports over 3,6 and 12 months to find out whats improved
  • build reports to find out how much has been spent on a single product (ie internet bill)
  • export data for transfer to other applications
  • add primary bank accounts and primary income sources (like wages etc)

Just wondered if there is anything obvious I have missed?

Edit:
I should have mentioned this when I first posted, I use Mac OS X as my primary operating sytem so windows apps are not much use to me I am afraid.

thanks for your time :D

I think Microsoft Money will do all this. I find it excellent, and I have an obsolete version (1999).
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

Thanks for your reply. My boss uses this and speaks quite highly of it, the problem is its a desktop application. I dont always spend money at home. I have my works PDA, or I have my work PDA so i can bring up this application, enter and forget. when I get home it can just build the reports for me.

If I go for the desktop application route, chances are I will forget and then the entire system is lost.

hehe :D its not that difficult, honest! just takes a little understanding of the basics and then the world is your oyster!

I use MS Money 2003 and find it very helpful. I heard somewhere the new version of Money is compatible with PDA's? Not sure if that is true or not though?
    Saving for a deposit: £20,551 / £25,000 - 82% of the way there...
  • Thanks for your reply Jaymz. I probably should have mentioned this in the first post, I am using MAC OS X as my primary operating system (all though, I am posthing this from a windows pc) so I needs to be cross platform, the web allows me to do this.

Have you looked at these two then - Moneydance and GNUCash?
