currently do about 10-12 miles round trip to work, which is about 10-15 minutes away, so about 30 minutes travel each day.
however if you were considering a move in job, but would be about a 70 mile roundtrip (majority of motorway) and say each leg would be 45 minutes so 1.5hrs travel each day.
how much salary £ increase would you consider before thinking about doing an extra 60+miles each day and increase travel time of each day by over an hour on average?

let's say current weekly miles of 70 miles commute at a cost of fuel of say £0.15/mile = £10.5 fuel/weekly
 x say 48 working weeks = £504 fuel/yearly
 new 70 miles daily (350 miles/weekly) again at £0.15 fuel/mile £52.5
 x say 48 working weeks = £2520 fuel/yearly
if on higher tax banding say 60%, gross £4300, net would be £2580
so even if a salary increase of £4300 that would only cover fuel and not even consider time of travel (lost time during the day with family/friends), increase wear and tear on car components.
 so even a hike of say £6000x60% = £3600 - £2580 of fuel = about £1000 disposable income/yearly doesn't really add up

It would probably be cheaper just to move house:Dmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0

But if the new job has better prospects then that needs to be considered along with the day to day expense of it.0

think both could offer something similar over the course of 3-5 years
would you go for it if it was say £6k increase?0

No - theres a lot to be said about lack of commute! If they both have the same prospects then I'd stick with what I know. Firstly, it'll look good if you stay with one company for a number of years, and secondly you might hate the new company.
I'd stick with what I know... Trying to become debt free but this site makes me spend a fortune!!! Trying to become debt free but this site makes me spend a fortune!!! 0 0

Most of the people in my entire county end up doing a 50-60 mile daily round trip to commute. Many millions do in this country so expecting to be financially compensated for it by increased wages is likely to lead to a lot of disappointment.0

Excluding things like better prospects, why bother increasing the commute time if there is no financial benefit?0

Anything under £9K would make it not even worth considering.0

I drive around about a 30mile round trip to work everyday, some of my colleagues live much closer but i guess you have to put it down as one of those things.
With regards to changing job, I agree that if aint broken 'dont fix it' as you may not enjoy your new job, get on as well with new workmates etc...
