thought every person of State Pension age got at least £110 per week?

Almost. nrsql has posted the figures. However, that is means tested and savings over £6000 reduce that figure down. Not all investments are included in that means test though.

  • Hi all, thanks for responses. I'm going to try to talk to them later today when I get DH safely re-parked back in hospital for surgery tomorrow (should have happened last week but the 'full kit of parts' was not available - don't ask).

Never quite worked out why the self employed are not allowed serps or sp2.

Because they don't pay the employers contribution of 12.8%

Which will be great news for the self employed if a higher single state pension comes in at a later date.

It was a proposal made along with a range of others. Its not happening at this stage but at one point Labour did have it down as a commitment. That is no longer the case but the various think tanks and reports continue to press for a single state pension.

In the Pensions White Paper there is a plan to relink the state pension to earnings from 2012, but only if it's "affordable".

    I'm not holding my breath.

However there are big benefits for women coming through shortly with a reduction in the NI years needed for the full state pension to 30, and various other changes which should boost the ability to claim. Should increase the number of women getting it after 2010 from 30% now to 70%. (87% of men get the full state pension already.)
    Trying to keep it simple...;)
