Filthy Carpet

Options
We used to have a pale beige vcarpet ( less than 6 months ago) , and yes I know i need my head looking at as I have two young children and two step children. However I was adament that was that was what I wanted. It took my hubby at least a month to stop shaking his head, wagging his fingers and rolling his eyes at my decision!

anyway, I now have a carpet that desperately needs cleaning.
We have borrowed parents old Vax but i have to be honest, its not great and with the size of the room I would need to take a week off work to do it all.

Has anyone got anyone, anything that that can recommend or should I just go for the professionals and get them in to do the lot.

  • I'd be inclined to get someone in - they can have it done and be on their way while you're still reading the instructions!
Believe me, I've tried all ways (like you I have a beige carpet): - hiring a machine to DIY (more costly and back breaking than you think), borrowing a machine from friends/family to DIY (less costly than above but TBH most 'domestic' carpet cleaners just aren't up to the job) and at one time I even bought a carpet cleaner (thinking I would cover my costs eventually) but I ended up with a bulky machine that was difficult to use and store and had disappointing results. None of the above matched the guy who came in with his 'industrial' machine, did a fab job and was gone in half a day.

  • I would highly recommend hiring a Rug Doctor machine. Do a search on the site and I am sure you will find lots of other happy customers as I recall several threads about carpet cleaning. THis is by far the best machine I have used and very straightforward to boot. You do have to buy their detergent but works out at around £30 a day inclusive and for that you can clean your whole house.
  • As you've found it's gonna be hard (if not impossible, with kids) to keep it clean ... might be more economical( in the long term) to rip it up and replace it with something easier to clean .... at least you won't be paying to get it cleaned again in six months time

I've got a Bissel upright carpet cleaner which is pretty good.

I move house regularly because of work and have to have carpets which come up to standard or I get billed.

It does not remove every stain, admittedly, but I've never recieved a bill for a carpet since I got it.

Plus, all my friends regularly borrow it.

It is also very easy to use - unlike a vax which is backbreaking.

Mine is just the basic model too, you can get more advanced models which would be even better at cleaning I guess.

I am having a new carpet tomorrow, slightly darker than beige more toffee if you know what I mean. The one that's going is pale green and it's been down for 10 years, we have had it cleaned by various professionals over the years. The last time was just before Christmas last year, I got a leaflet through the door offering half price carpet cleaning and they had set prices for particular rooms, the cost was a bargain and he did a great job in about 2 hours.

I have tried the Vax machines, back breaking in my opinion, I would need a month to do mine LOL.

Hope you get it clean again, we banned shoes from our lounge when we had children running in and out with friends etc. and we had a no food and drink except at the table policy too.

  • After having the men folk round watching the old firm game in my sitting room yesterday there were quite a few stains on our carpet today (granted there were one or 2 stains from spilled coffee too, that were already there, I've tried 1001 on them but always ended up with a clean spot in the middle and rings around the edges)

The carpet is a really heavy woven cream/biscuity type colour, andI discovered today that a bowl of almost boiling water and fairy liquid worked wanders, and mostly by working the suds into the stains, rather than the water itself, I know it may not work for this but it's something to consider!!!

  • My DS has a pale cream/toffee carpet in his room and then started fiddling with bright blue modelling clay all summer, bits got trodden in and I was fearing the worst. For some reason I tried bicarb, by itself left and 30 minutes later with a little effort it was spot free.

I'd definitely get someone in to do it as norther_star says they can be done really quickly. They could scotchguard it for you as well which might help for the future.

Rug Doctor is a good machine, very effective dirt removal but I found it left my carpet very wet and it took ages before I could put my furniture back. Don't know if my experience was typical or not? Next time I'd definitely call in a Professional, my neighbour had her whole (4 bedroom) house done last year, it just took an evening, and the carpets were dry in an hour.
