REAL lightbulb moment

OK, I had a mini lightbulb moment last month, but a tragic event has really hammered it home.
My father in law died suddenly last weekend and we have uncovered several debts and red bills - he has not even left enough money to pay for his funeral, and was a compulsive gambler.
The stress sorting all this out has placed on my fiance on top of his grief is just too much and I am really worried about him. We've also had to use the money we'd set aside for the wedding to pay funeral expenses etc.

It really made me think - I owe more money that F-I-L, though my incomings are a lot higher, and if something dreastic happened to me I really wouldn't want my relatives to be in our situation.

so basically I am even more determined to sort out my money! :(

  • Just wanted to say sorry to hear about the death of your FIL. This must be a tough time for you and your fiance. I know what you mean about not wanting to leave debts for others which is one reason why I, like you, am trying to deal with things now. I hope you get through this sad time for you.

  • Hi vodkabarbie. Sorry to hear about your family's loss. My LBM was triggered for similar reasons and know exactly what you mean. It's a shame it takes things like this to make you realise but I guess that's the way life is sometimes.

    Best wishes to you both.

you dont say what FIL situation was but bare in mind that only his estate need pay his debts, the family do not need to do so.
  • Thanks Clapton, we've been contacting everyone and letting them know there is no estate so hopefully we can close eveything off as soon as possible.
thanks also for the best wishes. I know things will get easier in time but right now I just want to crawl into a hole!

  • Sorry to hear about your loss. It's something I worry about too- if anything happened to me my husband would be forced to sell our house to pay off my debt and vice versa. The sooner it's all gone the better.
