i have been contacted by solicitors who tell me my mother who is in a care home and paying her own fees is eligible for some sort of a cash rebate because the goverment pay local councils some money to help people in my mothers position does this ring bells with anyone? does anyone know anything about this? i need some independant advice please

    How do these solicitors know your mother is in care?
    How do they know her financial position to make a judgement like that?

    There are means tested benefits which can be claimed. Its not a rebate but just your normal DSS benefits. It really depends on her assets, savings and investments as to whether she would qualify or not. Briefly, does she have much in the way of savings, investments or property?

    It seems likely to be solicitors who will look to take a percentage of any money she is entitled to or a fee for doing something that you and she can do without legal help.

    Does your mother have a medical need for care such as for Alzheimers or some other condition that requires nursing rather than basic assistance with day to day activities?

    It can be possible to get £101 a week from the NHS towards the nursing element of care home fees, or in cases where more nursing is needed, to get all of the cost paid as "continuing health care". For more details start by reading:
