The market will decide to build shoeboxes and shoddy monstrosities. Is that what you want?
Funny how it only does that in the UK.
The lack of competition for new builds caused by the difficulty of getting planning permission is wrecking another part of the UK house market IMO.
New build houses in most countries is of a very high standard.0 -

I disagree due to our population density, especially in the South East.0 -

It isn't a joke - it depends where you live - if you live in our neck of the woods (Berkshire) there is nothing available for someone on a £30k salary. If you live in the likes of Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire etc, there certainly are plenty of decent 3 bed houses for a £100k or less.
Funnily enough I was looking at 4 bed detached houses on Rightmove this morning and there were 2 properties that caught my eye.
One is this in Lincolnshire at £220k

and the other was this down the road from us for £450k

They are identical houses built by the same builders.
To say there is no affordable housing in the UK is daft - because there is. It just may not be in the area where you live or would like to live.0 -
Oh sorry! Your second paragraph.
I have experience of living in 3-4 countries, France, Oman, Australia and the UK.
One of those places has new-build houses that are generally speaking of poor quality. One of those places has very restrictive planning policies.
It's hard to buy a new house in the UK that isn't built by a volume builder unless you're buying at the top end of the market. The reason is you need to submit detailed plans and employ a lawyer to argue the toss very expensively for you in the UK, that isn't the case in most countries.0
