Self Employed HMRC & NICO issues

Morning All

Self Employed & BR March and I need help to be sure what to ask for to get HMRC & NICO sorted out.

HMRC - I hadn't heard from them so at end july I told them I was BR (because apparently their post is 3 months behind ) and recently got a letter saying I didn't have to file a tax return any more
Don't understand I'm self employed so have by law to file SA
Please can anyone confirm what I should be asking them to sort out as I really want to get this done & dusted, I believe I should be
- submitting a SA up to the date of BR
- getting a new UTR for the SA that starts the day after BR for the relevant tax year

NICO
I have small amount of NI arrears which I believe should got into BR, have informed them (at same time as HRMC) but still not got an amended bill - so what I owe is building up again
(TBH I'm not even sure if I should claim low income exemption)
Should I just try to pay or save it up until they sort it out (does that also need some kind of new reference?)

Any help / advice / experience appreciated

once BR your NI and PAYE due are wiped, so you will be asked to complete TWO "SA" forms, but the one upto BR wont have to be paid (id guess you didnt make anything THOUGH....)

not sure when you can shred/burn all pre-BR paperwork, its either the day you go BR or the day your discharged, i did mine when i got home from the court on that sunny day in may 2008

your bills restart from the date of your BR

    Thanks for confirmation about 2 SA's - you're right didn't make much :(
Most of my paperwork went to OR anyways :)

  • After giving up trying to get through on the phone resorted to going into the city to the inquiry centre (and got put through straight away on the phone there!).
I think it's finally being sorted out, have confirmed that a new UTR and records are being set up, will have 2 self assessments to complete for before & after
Also got advice about claiming NI low income waiver too :) though not sure of the impact that would have on future benefits/pension etc

thanks max for the advice - it helps to know what to ask for!

if you claim NI "credits" via "low income" then you wont be affected, BTW you should look at claiming tax credits (and child tax credits if have children) if your nett income is so low
  • Thanks max
No children so less likely but will definitely investigate.
