Young people will be required to stay in school, training or workplace training until the age of 18.
The Department for Education and Skills has confirmed plans to raise the school leaving age in England by 2013.

This subject interests me too because its unclear.

DX2 does that mean for kids already in high school or for next years intake?

If you are already in high school in the year 2013 can you leave at 16? or will you be forced to stay until 18? or will it only apply to the first years of high school in 2013?

i'm confused.:o I've even asked teachers at DDs high school and depending on who you ask you get a different answer so still non the wiser lol hope the school know for definate by the time she reaches 16:rotfl:

My middle son is about to start year 9 and my understanding of it is that he will have to stay on until he is 17. My younger son who is about to start year 8, will be required to stay until he is 18.

Well that was the way it was explained to us by the high school but whether we all got the right end of the stick is another story!

Edit - Not that it makes any difference to us, they are bothing planning on doing A levels or other advanced education anyway (dependent on how youngest copes in exams!)
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Year 8 = 2nd year High school (Age 12-13)
    Year 9 = 3rd year High School (Age 13-14)
Year 10 = 4th year and the start of the GCSE years. (Age 14-15)

Hope that helps....I'm still getting used to it myself and eldest starts in 6th form next week!

My daughter and stepson were born 6 months apart.

    Daughter april 96
    Stepson Oct 96

So different year intake. My son is affected by the new rules, however my daugter isnt. She is staying on anyway but she wouldnt have to.

So I think if you started Sept 2008, you have to stay on till 18

I think the schools should send a letter round to the parents of each year group and giving them the year they now legally leave school.
  • my "about to go into year 9" has told me has to stay until 17, whereas her brother could have left at 16. Irrelevant really they will both be studying until the next decade.
