Hi OP - I have just started signing on and I get to use the postal type of sign on and Im only 5 miles from the job centre but seem to be outwith their catchment. I am in Scotland so don’t know if the rules are different where you are....

While I agree with the sentiment to get out there to see opportunities etc I don’t agree with the suggestions to buy a weekly travel ticket.. around here that costs 15 quid and I certainly couldn’t afford that out of my JSA each week. In my view you need a job to travel daily.

    Good luck to your son

    Thanks for the reply.

People automatically assume because your on JSA that your lazy and don't want to work. I'd like to see their faces when they get the boot and end scavenging for every penny they can get due to the lack of jobs. There really are none, it’s that simple. Applying for McDonalds several times, and not getting a reply for a year, says something.

Oh, and regarding the original post, it’s gotten slightly worse. Now he needs to sign and also have to go back for an "active job search interview" every other day, for which ever day its set, and not changeable. So that’s no longer going to be £8 there and back, it will £16.

Sorry, but the offer for discount does not apply because his only been on the JSA for just over 2 months so he still has to wait at least 1 1/2 months and then wait for the application to be granted which could take another 2 weeks.

And how dare you say that its a waste on "tax payers" money. I take that as a personal offence... I've been working for 18 years, and never seen those tax dollars I've paid actually be put to use in my favour, apart from feeding fat cat politions. You all of a sudden turn him into some sort of a drug abusing youth because his on JSA. You sum up my 18 years and compare it to a lousy £8 return from what I’ve paid over the years, as nothing?

Thanks for all the others that suggested other routes, I'll look into them and let him know how it worked out.

Without the discount the oyster daily bus price cap is £3.90, if he walks part of the way there and back so he only needs one bus each way the daily cost can be kept at £2.40 so even if he had to go 5 days a week the cost would be kept down to £12.

TFL journey planner for Deptford to Forest Hill says it's a 21 min bike ride, might be an option to consider if he can get hold of an old bike and there is somewhere safe to leave it at the job center.

The next closest JC would be Forest Hill which is 2 buses away, and 2 buses back. = £8 single or £4.80 oyster.

The daily cap for Oyster on buses is £3.90.

So if I have £10 toped up on my oyster card, and use it 4 times [4 x £1.20 = £4.80] I would only be charged £3.90? Even if I jumped on a bus 20 times in that day, it'll only charge £3.90?

    Just curious.

Correct. That is what the cap does, once you reach the daily cap on your oyster it doesn't take any more money off.

Oh this is hillarious. I've just googled Deptford to Forest Hill. I'm sorry but he IS lazy if he can't walk 2 and a half miles each way! It's not as if he has anything better to be doing.

It IS a complete waste of taxpayers money. Unfortunately it's not just your taxes it's coming out of, it's all of ours. Why should we pay for him to sit on his arris all day and then pay again for him to go and sign on so he can continue to do so??? Madness.

For the record, no one called your son a drug abusing youth. You strike me as a bit melodramatic. Maybe this is why he is like he is, refusing to walk a small distance to help himself and running to mummy for the answer to a simple question?

And before you start ranting about how I can say that about your son when I don't even know him....no, I don't but that's the impression you have given of him.
