Wedding planner

Hello Everyone

I recently took on a new job at the same company I've been working at for 6 years. I've given it a good 5 months and to be honest am hating it. Its really made me think about what I want to do for the rest of my life.

I've been reading a book called 'screw work, lets play' written by John Williams and I think its fantastic. its made me think about what i love doing and how i could turn it into a living! (i totally recommend this book to everyone, especially if you dont like your current job.

Anyway, it makes you really think about things and one of the things i loved doing last year was planning my own wedding. I've found a course at institute of professional wedding planners which looks great but also too good to be true as it claims there are mega bucks to be made.

Does anyone know of anyone else who has done this course? I'd like to try to find out if it really is as good as it claims. :j

I believe it is a competitive industry.

Have you thought about hospitality courses - events management in the broader sense perhaps - which would have wider employment options *inluding* weddings?

Planning your own wedding is probably a lot easier than someone elses.

allthough over time you make the contacts to get a cut of the business you throw their way.

First think to ask yourself is why did you not use one?

and how many people do you know that used one?
  • Thanks Emmzi

that is certainly something else I can look at too.

    "screw work, lets play" ??
TBH I have no idea about becoming a Wedding Planner but I do know that running your own business does not involve any element of play.
It's tough but can be rewarding , you work 60 plus hours a week , you live the business and you have to work harder than you have ever done for any employer.
If you don't it's called a hobby and after 12 to 24 months you will be back to square one.
Get completely committed , be prepared to work sometimes for nearly nothing and be absolutely sure you are giving a service that knocks any established competitors into second place.

Yes, thats my questions exactly. I emailed the institute to ask them that as i loved doing the investitive work myself and was mindful of the cost of everything.

Might have to back to the drawing board and think about event management as Emmzi suggested.

    thanks All

I used a wedding planner as I run my own business and had limited time to organise my own wedding. She did a huge amount of work and massively undercharged me considering the amount of work she must have done, but using a wedding planner was a great way to have the stress taken out of the day. I have too much stress running my business!

However, I'm probably not your average person getting married, being older, and not having a mother/sister/army of friends with loads of spare time to devote to organising my wedding.

I got the impression it's a difficult industry to break into, having said that, the venue where I had my wedding approached my wedding planner wanting to employ her to organise weddings there after they saw what she did for me.
