Please help and don't laugh at me technical gurus.
I have managed to download a video file but can't get it to play. Real Player says it needs software to play but then says it can't download it. The file plays on Windows Media Player, but audio only which is a bit rubbish.
The file extension is "avi" and I am assuming I need to download something to play it - I have googled but am a bit overwhelmed with the results. Can anyone recommend some software I can get so I can play this damn thing?
Please help - I am doing this :wall:

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee."

It sounds like you don't have the correct codec for the file type!
Do you get an error meaage?
When this happens to me I just delete the file because I cannot be bothered to find the codec....sorry!Problem of the week!
My laptop keeps on telling me it has an ip address conflict with another computer on my network and its driving me mad trying to sort it out!!! Any suggestions PM me please!0 -
in windows media player select tools, options, file types you could click select all, or look down the list and tick windows video file (avi)

VLC media player for Windows is the software I use. It will play lots of different files without asking you to download any new codecs.
I'm assuming you are using Windows XP so
Go to this link:
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Click one of the links on that page to download the file. Install it and then open you downloaded video file in the program

If I was you I would Google - how play avi freeware & you should find results, I'm sure this is a fairly familiar extension, which I have come across, although just searched my newish laptop & don't have this file extension to hand, sorry I can't be of more help.0

Or try Media Player Classic, plays everything for me.Sigless0

It's probably a DivX or an XviD video.
The recommended players may well work.
If not, this bit of kit will let you know what you need and where to download it;http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en0 -

Tried this after trying the above suggestions and it worked. It is embarrassing how happy I am about this - I nearly cried with frustration last night!
