How can I find out who a telephone number belongs to?

I'm sure I've seen it on here before but can't find it at the mo. I keep getting phone calls from a number I don't recognise, and as soon as I pick the phone up the line goes dead. I don't want to dial the number in case it's some kind of scam.
Can anyone help?

try 1471 it should tell you tel no of caller unless withheld by caller or from a network which does not give out.0

Type the number into google, I've done this before, sometimes I get a result and sometimes not.Bulletproof0

Have you tried:
https://www.icstis.org.uk
This is what I usually try.I hope this helps.
Edit: Just read your thread properly.Usually the type of calls you have described are from a call centre, they ring multiple numbers at the same time(well a computer does),when you pick up the phone a consultant will be alerted to take your call. However if all consultants are busy the call cuts off. That is what BT told me anyhow.0 -
think there is a website where you can sign up and stop these sorts of calls, phone preference agency?0

Can anyone expand on that one and tell us how to block these calls from call centres?0 -
Yes the TPS does work very well. I would call BT with the number in question and although they won't tell you who the number belongs to they will tell you if it is a company. Otherwise, go to a callbox and ring the number-you can't get caught in a scam that way.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0

The TPS certainly does work, it just takes a few weeks. I used to have this kind of calls up to 5 times a day, absolutly maddening, now I don;t get any.

Already on the TPS and have been for some time now. Occasionally we do get calls from sales people, but they're very apologetic when they find out they shouln't be calling us. I've tried the icstis website and all it says it that it's a number originating in Manchester. Think I'll give it a couple of weeks and if the calls keep coming I'll ring them from a call box to get them to stop. Thanks for your help,
