Another day..another airline...

There are individual 'reasons' for this one - bird flu being a favourite - but it does seem that airlines and travel agents are having a particularly bad time. Is this a sign of a world recovering? Maybe airlines with routes to cloud cuckoo land are still doing ok.

Plans to sack about 1,000 flight attendants to enable a takeover by a Mexican investment group were blocked by the government earlier this week.

    Different country, same old story.

Hmm - good result in international - wasn't Madrid one of the few European airports open for a lot of the dust cloud period with anyone trying to get back to Europe booking tickets there if they could be had at almost any price - nice for the bottom line methinks!

Most airlines are incredibly highly geared. They don't own those aircraft; they lease them on long-term contracts. They are not that far away from bankruptcy even when they are doing well.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Not so much highly geared. Its the fixed costs they still incur. Payroll costs, plane costs, fuel and airport costs.

A flight isn't cancelled because there only 100 passengers on a 300 passenger seat plane.

Airlines are exposed far more than many businessess to the laws of supply and demand. Higher fares may be the longer term outcome.

Barriers to entry are low as well where open skies agreements are in place - no wonder there is a tendency towards collusion
