Claiming Tax rebate from old summer job in 2002?

Hi guys,
This may sound ridiculous to some but I thought i'd just put this question out here and see what you guys think. Anyway here is something which has been running through my mind of late being skint saving to rent a flat here in the southwest.
Basically I had a summer job back when I was a student in 2002 where I was working part-time and should have been, as a student, tax excempt. The trouble was at the time the employers were a real pain in the !!!!!! when it came to sorting out my P45(or 60?) form(i think thats what it was) and basically were too lazy/stupid about organising iand cooperating with me, which in the end led to me working 4 months at full tax. I was told that if I filled out some sort of tax rebate form back then I could have got the money back at the end of that tax year.
Well unfortunately due to it being my final year after, I got bogged under stressing about work, exams and final projects and forgot all about it. Well I thought that I would never see that money again, but then I got thinking - technically Im still owed that money is some shape or form and would I still be elligable to claim it back even though years have gone by and im now in a full time job?...
What do you guys think? I know its a shot in the dark, but jut think I have nothing to loose by asking.
I was paid in PAYEE slips (I think) by DirectDebit but unfortunately no longer have any original pay slips. The company still exists though, but I dont think they'd take kindly to an ex-employee striding in and wanting copies of 3 year old pay slips.
Anyway, just let me know if you think I should forget it or not.

You have six years to make a claim for overpaid tax so the time element is no problem. The difficulty might be the lack of documentation.
Write to your Inspector of Taxes (the address should be on your code number notice) and give him all the details you have about your earnings in the 2002/03 tax year and the company you worked for.
The company who employed you should have submitted a return to the Revenue in April 2003 so you need to help the inspector track this down.
As you say the company may not want to give you details from so long ago but ring them and ask for their PAYE reference as this will simplify things immensely. If you explain why you want it they may even volunteer to provide the other info as well.

Thanks for the info. Good to know I can still get it back - should be around £300 or something. My only obstacle now are the dodgy people who work at the company.0

No harm in asking..they can only say no...It depends if the company informed the tax office of your employment in its year end returns.and paid over your deductions .even if not if you still have your P45 P60 are even just payslips it may help your case...best to go in person to the tax office with your NHI number to hand...They might get you to fillout a tax return0

JC4LAB It is the law that they have to provide details of all employees working for them at any point during the year, even if it is only a day. If they didn't they could be fined thousands.
Briskc1 - As JC4 said, go to any tax office with your NI number, and they should be able to key it into the computer and let you know if they have your employment details for 2002. You say you don't have any payslips, do you still have your Bank statements from then. Anything to prove that you were employed and paid by the company at that time, and in the unlikely situation they don't have your details they could follow it up.0 -
For small businesses with no proper wages records P60s etc of its part time employess, the risk they take is... the tax office may,but not always, disallow those wages as a business expense or ask the business itself to pay the tax on the wages paid..
Businesses operating PAYE nust file their returns by 19 May after the 5 April year end or receive a penalty if late..this could l grow the longer you leave it0
