There;s no automatic right to make such a claim, but many employers might pay if wages were short due to their error. Why were the wages short?

But surely, if you suffer a loss as a result of somebody else's mistake or breach of contract then you can look to them for compensation (having of course taken all reasonable steps to minimise your loss). The fact that this is in an employment situation doesn't change this.

Whether it is wise overall to sue your employer in this situation is of course another matter......
  • If the wages were short I'd definitely expect them to pay my bank charges, they are in breach of contract after all.

Of course you can "look to them for compensation" - but that is a different matter from getting it. There is nothing here to say why the wages were short (which is why I asked about it) - so I do not assume that you can go looking for anything for anything until I know whether or not the employer was at fault. There is no automatic right, even if the loss is a result of the employers action, to compensation. You would have to sue if they refused (which means it isn't a right to get this money) and you could win or loose - depends on the circumstances. Nothing in the OP said it was an error on the part of the employer or a breach of contract - that is speculation. They could be short because the employee was off sick, failed to fill in a timesheet, or some cause that the employee created!

As I said above - that is an assumption for which there is currently no evidence at all.

Well perhaps I should have put the IF in capital and bold letters but I stand by what I wrote.

I thought I had made it clear that there had to be fault for there to be a claim!

Did you ask your work for pay to help you until next pay day? Happend to me a couple of times and they gave me a cheque to cover dd's. I doubt they'll give you the charges but worth a try!
