Where can I buy oat groats please?

Good morning all.

I have a little grinding machine that grinds up oat groats for use in breakfast, cooking etc but i'm really struggling to get the actual groats!

I've seen them for sale online and they are really quite cheap at a pound or two a bag but then delivery is expensive because of course they are heavy.

I live between Leicester and Burton on Trent and have been searching for a shop that sells them with no luck so wondered whether anyone else on here buys them and where from please?

They are absolutely stunning when freshly ground and are still full of all the fragrant oil. I really enjoy a bowl homemade blackberry jam, but I'm getting a bit worried now that this winter I'll be eating cornflakes!

I usually buy them in 5 to 10 kg packages and that lasts me quite a long time.

Any ideas where to buy them and not pay three times more for postage?

Never heard of oat groats. What are they? Do they have another name?

Hi there. If you google oat groats you'll find tons of information on what they are and how you eat them.... I love them!

I know oat groats are often available at working water mills so I'm doing a bit of a search at the moment as I can also pick up some wheat.

Anyone know of a working mill in the Midlands? I've rang a couple but they arent actually milling their own flour, they buy it elsewhere.

I've found a great one at Shipton (Glous) but its 2 1/2 hours away :(

My local health food shop stocks Infinity foods' (wholesale & retail) organic oat groats. But I think you will find it hard to find shops that provide both oat groats and free P&P.
Money is not the root of all evil.
It depends on how you obtain it and how you use it.

No I don't mind paying postage of £5 or something, but its been coming up at between about £9 and £12 which makes it as much as the product!

I asked in my local health food shop but she said she couldnt get them.

Well - then I guess your local "health food shop" is one of those chain "pill popper" shops as I call them.

There are health food shops - and then, on the other hand, there are shops that call themselves health food shops but are basically shops for selling vitamin supplements, etc. I am guessing that the shop you refer to comes in the second category.

I have both types of "health food shop" in my area. I would probably get a similar response in the "purveyors of Pills" shop - but I would be able to buy my oat groats in the genuine health food shop (and do.....).

Look and see if you have somewhere of a more independent/"hippy-ish" type of health food shop in your area - and then you will have a "real" health food shop and should be able to just pick a packet off the shelf.

I don't know where about you are in the midlands but there's a working windmill kind of local to where I am clicky. I know they do a few of the farmers markets around here and their flour makes lovely bread.

Ooh thanks for that. Its within an hour away from me and would probably make for a nice day out. I'll give them a ring and find out whether they do oat groats.

Ceridwen, no its a proper health food shop. To be honest I was very shocked because she has a big catalogue on her desk thats full of items she can order. I just wonder wether its not worth her while as the groats are really quite cheap.

I will have a look in Leicester town centre next time i'm there to see if there is a little health food shop.

Did you say you buy them too? They do make the most gorgeous breakfast dont they? I grind mine roughly and leave all the bran and everything in... wonderful!
