I am a 6.5 and took a 7 but they are far too long. But a 6 the strap across is too tighttravelover0

If at all possible you do need to try fitflops on before you buy (or at least check that you can return for free).
I have heard many people say you need to size up - but I normally take a size six, and a size 5 in fitflops. Apparently this is common with americans as they tend to have a lower instep and narrower feet, whereas europeans often need to size up because they tend to have higher insteps and/or wider feet.
