Hi..
I work in a hotel on a casual contract (work usually 4 days per work) however because the night porter manager has been on holiday I have been covering his shifts full time (plus my other job at the hotel).. On sunday night I slipped in the kitchen walk-in fridge. Im always careful because the floors in the hotel kitchen are dangerous however the floor had some kind of oil substance on the floor and my foot just went at a strange angle.
I didn't think anything of it until a couple of hours later when I couldn't walk properly, I was told by the duty manager that the hotel had been using new floor cleaner and they was supposed to wash it off with hot water afterwards but it had not been done..
Im not sure how sick pay works, because for staff you have to be there 2 years to get sick pay according to the policy I read, and I have been there 1 year 10 months, the doctor told me to make sure I rest it, I am going back to the doctors on tues when they decide if I have to go to the hospital for examination.
I was wondering how sick pay works because I cant live on no income..
Any help would be good
Thank you

Depending on the real nature of your casual contract, you may be entitled to statutory sick pay. Without the qualifying two years for the company sick pay scheme, you will not qualify for that.
Statutory sick pay is not very much and doesn't apply until you have been off work for three days.
If your employer will not pay statutory sick pay they have to give you a note confirming that so you could try to claim direct. Have a read here - http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAndBenefits/BenefitsTaxCreditsAndOtherSupport/Illorinjured/DG_100187860 -
Was the accident recorded in the accident book? It's important - it should be. But this is potentially a case where compensation might be claimed - the accident was due to negligence and shouldn't have happened.0

I have been given a statement of fitness for work SSP note from the doctor which they are paying me the money. The doctor said that you may have broken a small bone in the foot from the symptoms or it could be just tissue / ligament damage. I am going back in 7 days to be assessed (and poss xray) if there is no change between now and then. My foot is still is very sore and the same as a few hours after I did it.
I looking at those accident claims and I have another question, if I am to make a claim can I still work for the employer? I am not classed as incapable (because it will get better - so they can't dismiss me) but im not sure if I can still work for them while I pursue an accident claim?
Thank you for the adviceAudi - Vorsprung durch Technik0 -
Yes you can - but bear in mind that you are making a false assumption that they cannot dismiss you. Employers can always find a reason to dismiss if they really want to. I am not saying that they will, but just warning you not to make assumptions like that.0
