How to stop muffins from burning?

Can anyone give me any tips on cooking muffins?

Whenever I bake muffins, the tops end up burnt. I've made peanut butter & choc chip muffins, and rocky road muffins, which all taste fine but have offputting black bits on the top!

I'm using a gas oven, GM 5, middle shelf, for 20 minutes. Any muffin advice would be much appreciated. :)

Weird, GM5 really shouldn't be burning them. I wonder if your oven is running a bit hot? Do you have an oven thermometer to check it?

If not, I'd suggest keeping them at GM5 but after about ten or twelve minutes minutes when they should have risen nicely, make a little tinfoil cover and put it over the top. They will continue to cook but the tops won't brown too much.
  • It's a brand new oven, so hopefully it should be running at the correct temp, although I am still getting used to it.

Will try the tin foil, that sounds like a good idea, thanks. :)

Our oven has run 2 gas marks hot since the day we got it, thermometer is the best way to make sure. Is it gas or a fan oven? Gas ovens are prone to hot spots and fan oven tend to need turning down by 20 degrees for each recipe otherwise they burn everything.

Hope you manage to solve it, I know how horribly frustrating it is :D
  • It's a gas oven, I stupidly assumed that because it's new it would heat to the right temp!

Guess I'd better get hold of a suitable thermometer from somewhere, and check what temperature it's actually reaching. :)

Have you tried cooking them on a lower shelf? That is the only other think I can think of which might help...
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
