Can they make me do this?

Basically I work for a ferry company and I've been told I have to live onboard for the week, no problems with this but they've put me in a passenger cabin so I hear all the ships announcements and get woken up. Last time I lived on I finished half 7 and got woke up at midnight by the announcement took me around an hour to get back to sleep :/ I was actually late for work that day as well I didn't wake up on time. Just wondering where I stand on this?

Thanks

What does it say in your contract?
Did you ask to be put in another cabin?
Does everyone else sleep in the same cabin [colleagues when they have to do this]?
    Have you tried earplugs?
  • Yeah I have asked to be put in another cabin but he said there all taken and that he tries to rotate them but this one girl doesn't work unless she is in a crew cabin so she always has one :/

No not everyone some get crew other get passenger ones or they live off.

Yeah I have tried them no luck, I was going to go doctors and try get some sleeping tablets but don't suppose that's a very good idea.

Try industrial ear plugs and buy another alarm clock.
You have a bed to sleep in, food provided, security, You are so lucky.

Try to count your blessings that you have a job.

Prescription sleeping tablets are the one way you are guaranteed to sleep through your alarm.

I agree with the others, get some earplugs for now. You'll get used to any interruptions.
    Gone ... or have I?

If you are going to use earplugs make sure there is someone on board that knows this so you would be woken in case of an emergency....and make sure they're not too good or you'll sleep through your alarm too!
  • Where can I get industrial ear plugs? Are they good?

Wouldn't the ear plugs just block out the alarm anyway?

And I know I'm lucky to have a job doesn't mean I should put up with no sleep though! I'll have cracked by the end of the week and started necking pints behind the bar ha

Is the passenger cabin regularly used for crew?
Can the speaker be disabled when the cabin is occupied by crew?
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D

  • Yeah they just put crew in any cabin available, no speakers can't be disabled on this ship.

If your mobile phone has a vibrating feature, use that as an alarm clock.

I would have a chat with someone in engineering.

if the speaker is in the ceiling and it is panels it might be posible to disable BUT if the same speaker is used for the alarm this will probably not be legal.

Next solution is some accoustic material and some duct tape to cover the speaker.

Along with some ear plugs that should help a lot.

google ear plugs there are plenty of place to get them,
Again the engineering lads probably have a stock of them.

I would also raise the issue of the person that gets preference if this is to continue.
