tell them you have a rich sugar daddy who gives you anything you like ;)
Or a toy boy, if you're older.

We also have much lower living costs than most people, and my colleagues know why because it's come up in conversation. Another of my colleagues has a foreign holiday home. And some of them are still renting, or just thinking about mortgages. Why would you expect everyone to be in the same situation, even if they're on the same salary?

Turn the tables on them and ask why they can't afford thing, ask where are they wasting all their money?

What are they spending the money on, mobiles, sky, kids, debt, bad mortgage etc.

Give them a copy of the SOA calculator page with the link

Offer to help them sort out their finances and get stuff cheaper.

Don't wear your good stuff to work it's a waste.

You could also tell the truth, mum,dad,granny..... is paying for it.

Give them this website address - I've certainly got much more disposable income than before because of MSE!:rotfl:

It really isn't anyone's business, and who knows that the person in the desk opposite doesn't have thousands in the bank, or indeed a bankruptcy notice!

I think you're maybe more sensitive to this than anyone else is. It's probably not even noticed by other people. And as Savvy Sue says, everyone is at different stages. In a few years, I'll have no mortgage either :T

They may not be wasting their money though so saying that may come across as a tad insensitive! Where I live the cheapest flats you can rent are about £550 and there are very few studios or rooms to rent.
Council tax and water bills (b****y Wessex water!) are also pretty high. So people may genuinely be struggling to live on their wage.

OP - I would just tell your colleagues the truth. If they ask you why you have so much disposable income just say, "I was very lucky and inherited a house so I am not saddled with a mortgage". To be honest, there are quite a few people around in your position so they may not be that suprised.

I would be honest with them. One thing I learned in years of retail management is that people who appear to be living beyond their means are looked on with suspicion as they may be on the fiddle. If you give elusive answers this could compound their suspicions! So just be honest with them, tell them that you know how lucky you are, and I think all the questioning will die down.

I must admit I thought the same. It doesn't sound like a big deal to me. The OP is just being over sensitive.

It's weird. The british are so secretive about money. Where i was living for the last few years it's considered polite to talk about incomes and wealth - noone bats and eyelid. To be secretive about it would be considered the height of vulgarity.

in my last job in retail everyone was so worried other people were getting paid more than them for doing the same job, could your collegues feel you've been given a sneaky rise and they havent ?
