Hi, i just had a depo yesterday after the nurse took the coil out. I was told i can put on weight with it and watch my diet ( great!.. erhhhno! i am trying to lose weight).
i came home and searched online, it says that you can lose bone density, should have calcium and no have it longer than 2 years and of course regular exercise.
anyone can tell me their experience ?

I've been on it for almost 2 years now and haven't found any problems at all. The exercise thing is to prevent the loss in bone density that can sometimes happen with hormone treatments inc some contraceptive methods. I am a reasonably fit person, do lots of walking, non smoker so I don't have any concerns about continuing the depo. The other alternative is possibly the implant which I want to talk to my nurse about next time I go. Of course, we are all different.
My daughter is also a depo user as her periods were so painful etc and only got worse after she had her daughter, she is only 23 so has another 25 years plus ahead of her needing contraception so hubby is getting hints (quite heavy ones!) about getting the snip!!!0 -
I've been on Depo for over a year this time and was on it for over 2 years the last time, with 2 lots of implant inbetween.
I prefer the Depo because it stops my periods completly where as with the implant they stopped for a while then came back.
I do think I have put on weight, but haven't really tried too hard to lose it.
Hope it works well for you, do be carefull of looking up everything on the internet, you might never leave the house again!!!

I am very interested in going on this injection but am concerned about the return of periods when you decide to come off it .... I've heard horror stories of ridiculously heavy periods lasting non-stop for months! Hope it's just overexaggerated but don't want to go on if coming off will be horrible .....Saving up for our 2014 Las Vegas wedding and US road trip honeymoon, all deposits paid - just balances to go! :j0

I've been on depo for 9 years and I think it's great. NO periods, wonderful.
I was given it as an alternative to the pill as I was a smoker for 7 of those years, it's a far lower dosage of the same thing, just works better because it's injected straight into your blood stream. My surgery were trying to push the mirena coil a while back and I did consider it but looking it up on the internet I inevitably came across the minority of horror stories on it that you do when you look up anything medical!
I lost weight when I went on it actually - nothing to do with the depo and everything to do with my lifestyle. I have since put on weight again and lost again. Weight gain with contraceptives is usually quite minimal in reality.0 -
I had the Depo injection for 3 years, then went to implant for 3 years after that I went back to the injection for just over a year.I found pros and cons with both. The injection completly stopped my periods which was bliss but within a few months of being on the injection I put on a lot of weight (more annoyed the 2nd time as I'd worked really hard to get rid of the weight gained during first 3 years of having it!!)The implant didnt have such an impact on my weight (infact the last few months before it came out I was the lightest I'd even been! although a stressful break up may have contributed to this too!!) but the irregular periods were a nightmare!!! When I went back to have the implant removed the nurse said that they could have regulated my periods by taking the pill at the same time so that disadvantage could be taken away to an extent.Back to the Depo - the bone density thing worried me too. I spoke to the nurse who said there was no 'confirmed' research to suggest it is the case. However I think it depends on your age when taking it. I was worried as I started it at a very young age (16) when my bones were still forming and both my Mum and Nan have to take calcium tablets as have high risk of osteoporosis. This was the main reason I've swopped to the pill in last 2 weeks.A further thing to consider is how long fertility takes to come back after coming off the injection. One of my friends took about 2yrs to get pregnant, another has been off it for over a year without falling pregnant whereas a third fell pregnant within 3 months of coming of it!This has turned into a long post - Sorry!!!Hope it helps though2014 - This is Our Year :j0

I was on depo for six years. Did put on weight but this was completely because of lifestyle, I only had myself to blame. Loved it because I had no periods at all the whole time. I now have the implant and love that even more. Still no periods and now no injections either!
The only possible concern I think would be return to fertility. I had a year gap between depo and implant and didn't have a period at all during this time. Not a problem for me, but it could be for some people.0 -
thanks for all the replies, i had the depo injection previously, i think when my daughter was born, 3 years ago, the nurse said very little and i did not bother to research about it, i think with me, it made me deppresed, so went back to pills, many different ones, and finally gave up and decided to get the coil fitted in novermber last year. at first it was ok, but after the first 6 months it was not getting any better, i was bleeding every 3 weeks for 2 weeks at the time, so i had my period constantly.
when the nurse took the coil out last tuesday, i had to make my mind up quickly, i was sure i did not want any more pills and i am not looking to get pregnant anytime soon...Mejor morir de pie que vivir toda una vida de rodillas.0 -
