Cheap furnished flat...too good to be true?

Hi all help is needed URGENTLY please.

Found a 1 bedroom newly refurbished flat to rent in the City Centre where i work for £75/week. This was a personal add. I contacted the person by Email who replied that he was the flat owner and has got a contract in Nigeria and needs to find a tenant pdq. The £75 weekly rent include just about everything (Council tax, heating, internet, water etc.)......The add nor the email reply i got did not have a mobile phone number which i find strange when you consider the man is desperate to find a tenant.

What do you guys make of this?

I am not 100% sure this is legit as the owner added " You can move into the apartment when you receive the keys but the only problem is that am the only person who has the keys but i hope that we will reach a compromise on this " to his Email....why would he have said that??

When renting from the owner, what kind of paperwork do you receive to conclude the deal? and how are you sure the money you pay into his account will not be a scam and that flat belongs to someone else????

Thanks for advice.

It's not his flat/ there is no flat.
He gets to pick up £75 10x a week from people who think there is.
  • Surely people aren't that innocent to send money without having seen the goods and without a proper contract/guarantees etc...:o
  • Yep, the person will be taking "deposits" from prospective tenants but they'll never see a rental agreement.

You could decide to have a bit of fun with this shyster and ask for the full address of the property and then look it up on the Land Registry site to check who really owns it. That'll be four quid's-worth of fun, mind.
  • I'm game for it. I have replied to him stating that as Chief Inspector newly promoted to the local Forces, i was looking for that kind of flat etc. etc. Let see what comes next.

There are websites which give you advice on how to play these scamsters at their own game. Some of the stories you read are hilarious. I'd start by saying that you are extremely interested and would like to pay 12 months up front to secure the place - that should get him hooked. Then ask lots and lots of awkward questions via email about the flat - perhaps you have disabilities and need to know about door way sizes, or have allergies and need to know about the material the soft furnishings are made from etc. etc.
