I recall reading somewhere that there are uses for an Xbox (original not the new 360), which has a PC spec inside and can be used as either as network storage or other things.
Seeing as they are cheap and still spec'ed up./

You will need a chipped box though.0 -
Not sure if this is the same method but this way works;

You can install Linux without a chip. You won't be able to play games though.

Probably better if you're thinking of running it as a server, or NAS.
I've got XboxMediaCenter on mine, excellent piece of software. One of the best bits of freeware I've ever used in fact. Allows me to use it to watch videos, play music etc... but still play games should I want to."Boonowa tweepi, ha, ha."0 -

You can softmod it, my xbox doesn't have any extra chips in it but is running evoX, media centre and has an 80gb HD.
It's very good for watching downloaded TV shows etc across the network!0 -
Hi!
Are they available cheaply anywhere?
Thanks

thats what one of my friends uses his for, it's networked to a linux server that acts as a pvr (a sky+ type of thing using a program called mythtv) but you can also download things off the internet and watch them via the server on the xbox as well. it's pretty nifty, but i have NO idea how it all works!tr3mor wrote:You can softmod it, my xbox doesn't have any extra chips in it but is running evoX, media centre and has an 80gb HD.

That's exactly how mine is set up, XBMC on the xbox, and mythtv running on a linux box with 2 Freeview cards in. Even the missus thinks it's brilliantthetope wrote:thats what one of my friends uses his for, it's networked to a linux server that acts as a pvr (a sky+ type of thing using a program called mythtv) but you can also download things off the internet and watch them via the server on the xbox as well. it's pretty nifty, but i have NO idea how it all works!

I chipped my xbox with a modification chip with a switch so i could turn if off to play games normally or on xbox live without any trouble, the only thing i use it for now is the xbox media player, any DVD/CD i have with avi's or mpegs2/4 i can just put in and play without any trouble, i used to have it networked as well so i could just drag and drop files across to watch later but its in another room now.
think its illegal in the UK now to chip them tho as it by-passes the copy protection on the units or some rubbish like that.0
