Advice regarding old credit card debt and open account please!

I'm hoping someone could advise me on the best way to proceed. I applied for a Barclaycard this week hoping to move one of my interest paying debts on to their 0% deal. I had a letter saying they couldn't offer me a card as I already had an account with them.

Now that I have racked my brain I realise that this refers to a very old card account I had with them in 2000-2001 on which I owed about £500. This debt is obviously statute barred and I know that I don't want to acknowledge the card or the debt in any way, but neither do I want an open credit card account with an outstanding debt which may make it difficult for me to obtain further credit (I am currently trying to 'tart' several fairly hefty CC bills but so far have good credit).

How can I close the account without acknowledging the debt? They haven't asked me for payment though I expect this will be the next step.

Thanks for your help.

Surely if you owe(d) them money they will have closed the account and defaulted you??? Either way I personally would not take this any further.

You can't close and the account without acknowledging the account exists and hence the subsequent debt balance with it.

The point is the bank doesn't have to give you credit and if they have a bad history with you, they probably won't deal with you in the future, whether its on your file or not, your history is on their server for life.

All you can do is stay away from Barclays, and if they ask for payment send the statute barred letter.
Note, if it is statute barred then acknowledging the debt wont make any difference.
