Actually having bone removed by a rotary hand piece should in theory not be any worse as its all numb. Its quite common to remove bone in "regular" extractions anyway .... its just then its done by brute force rather than in a controlled manner. Once its all stitched back together it should heal in a similar manner because the bone will need to "heal" regardlessly. During the process you will just feel more rattling around.

Its not painful to have a tooth or teeth pulled any more than having your gum cut open etc. If youre dentist has done his job properly
you should not feel any pain at all. And as far as I remember it was about 6 teeth I had out, not 1.
No I dont want a medal. Youre thinking about it too much, just get on with it.

At the time, no, of course not. Once the anasthetic has worn off, yes it does make a difference.

You're opinion. I know myself better. If I go in unprepared, I will be far worse. I am doing what I know will be helpful for me. I don't need someone telling me that I'm a 'big girl's blouse' because I am worried about the recovery (based on my own past experience) and for wanting to be prepared.

As has been said above, everyone is different.

  • I had a wisdom tooth surgically extracted as a student and was sitting an oral medicine viva within the hour.

It's not like it's open heart surgery, some people will be a little swollen but normal, over the counter painkillers will mean at the very most you will need a day off work IMHO.

It's a different matter if you're having it done under general anaesthetic but under local anaesthetic I would say 24-48hours.

    Do you smoke?

    It's good to be prepared.

I had a premolar extracted y'day and got all faint & dizzy afterwards which didn't happen with a bad fall last year where I lost a tooth & then needed a 2nd extracting.

In future I will make sure my blood sugars are topped up before a procedure.

I've also made sure I had a supply of nourishing meal replacement drinks in. Glad I did as I still feel a little shaky on my feet.

Good luck OP. Prepare well and then go for it.

Look, I'm really pleased that some of you have had your wisdom (or other) teeth removed without any major issues. Really, I am, and I wish it had been like that for me the last time. But it wasn't. No, it isn't open heart surgery, but it still knocked me for six last time, so this time I wish to be more prepared.

One day may be fine for you, but going by past experience, it will not be enough for me. I have discussed and agreed a week with my employer. Should it take less, I can always go back earlier.

Smoke....yes. Not cigarettes though. And not every day. And no, I didn't smoke after the last extraction as I actually managed to give up for 18 months around that time.

I'm aware that I must not smoke after the extraction also.

Thank you Joyfull. I hope you're feeling better soon! Oh yes, getting some soups in is a good idea. The cup of soups here are really watery, so don't even come close to filling you up.

euro I think you may be a little on edge and over reacting to the posts a little. cold stream is actually a dentist as well so they have the advantage of being able to advise from both sides of the forceps so to speak!! The problem with posts is the "meaning" is difficult to convey with the lack of expression.

Mmm, maybe you're right. I'm not having the best day.

But several of the posts came across as patronising and I felt like my concerns were being dismissed as nothing, when they come from actual experience, not just an irrational fear.

I can't wait for it to be gone now, to be honest. Then it can't cause anymore problems, and there are no more wisdom teeth to be removed.

I think perhaps you could plan a few days abscence from work and if you feel better before that go in... I think its very sensible to discuss it with your employer as you have and agree that should you feel better sooner then you will of course return...I remember having wisdom teeth surgically removed some years back and still rate it as one of the most unplesent experiences I have had (I breezed through pregnancy and childbirth ...but fell at the hurdle of wisdom teeth)....yes there was some pain but it was really uncomfortable eating and virtually impossible to keep my mouth and other teeth feeling clean.....best of luck

Whatever happens, Im sure we all wish you well with all of this.

Chances are you will be fine and wondered why you worried so much.

    Good luck.

'and the 'big girls blouse' remark was very tongue in cheek, and so the 'wink'
No offence was intended, its my Geordie sense of humour takes over sometimes.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

It's alright. I think perhaps I was being oversensitive. Am having a 'I miss my family and friends sooo much day'. So, I apologise for that.

Plus it's easy to misinterpret the meaning on forums, rather than in person.'

There's also an element of being scared about having it done in a foreign country. But they speak very good English, so I shouldn't worry about that.

Thank you for the well wishes. Fingers crossed all goes perfectly. :)
