There are new rules in places due to the introduction of the Points Based Immigration system last year. I'd suggest you take a look at the UK Border Agency website as there should be advice and guidance on there. Good luck!
  • This is crazy! My family came to this country when I was 16 months and we are ALL British citizens now. I have NEVER had to prove anything to anyone! I've always had a British passport. I think you need to get advice about this - maybe go to a CAB office OR call home office and ask the questions without necessarily telling them all your details, as I cannot understand why someone born to a British mother who has lived here their ENTIRE life, for practical purposes, should have these kinds of issues coming up now. Please let us know how you get on, because I think this sounds worrying!

It's hard to believe you don't know your nationality! I'm no expert but I suspect you are an American citizen: if you were born outside the UK before 1983 only a British father would automatically pass on British citizenship, not the mother. Is your father American?

Give the Home Office a call. You may well be here illegally and need to get it straightened out out pronto! If you really are a US citizen you may not have a right to settle and work here...hope you are married to a UK citizen to help get that sorted.

by the way, benefits relate to residency, not nationality.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
  • "This page provides details of how a person born before 1983 to a British mother can register as a British citizen, using application form UKM."

the quote taken from the home office website proves i can apply for citizenship through my british mother and i am glad i found that out before reading your post!

" You may well be here illegally and need to get it straightened out out pronto! ":p

so i am ordering my mothers birth certificate and applying for a nationality status letter my future will be in someone else's hands now and if all else fails i can claim job seekers and get all my tax money( i have paid so far) back ;)
