Adult orthodontics on NHS???

Hi,

I'm 27 and have a 9mm over bite. I previously wasn't too concerned with my looks but as my wisdom teeth have come in the have knocked my teeth out of line. (They were pretty straight outwith the overbite) Now my teeth are over lapping and I find it more difficult to talk as I feel my tongue catches on one tooth at the front. This is effecting my work life as I'm very consious of my mouth, I get very nervous during meetings as I feel worried that I don't pronounce things correctly. My boss has brought it to my attention that he has noticed my that I'm not speaking up.

Is there a treatment that won't cost the earth? Would the NHS cover me for braces?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.... :o

I think a 9mm overbite might qualify for NHS treatment as an adult.

Do you have a regular dentist? Speak to him/her about it.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

It won't in our area. No orthodontists have an adult contract and unlikely to be complex enough to be accepted by the hospital.

Privately cost around £1500 to £2000 over 18 months to 2 years ish.

    Speak to your dentist.
  • I have an appointment in a couple of weeks!

    Thanks for your help!

I was thinking of the hospitals?

    Isn't 9mm enough?

( If you'll pardon the expression!)

The only hope would be the hospital. I know they wont do it in practice. A sympathetic orthobod is needed!

I remember the days when 9 mm was more than sufficient!!

However neither general or dental hospital will do adult ortho unless as part of treatment needing orthognathic surgery or ongoing as part of a general facial deformity. Everything else no. They even closed the ortho waiting lists for kids for 2 years.

Scotland is still under item of service so ortho may be still available for adults but with a long waiting list (locally to us waiting list is two years ish).
  • Ok... will see what my dentist says...

    Otherwise I better get saving.....
