whatever you use half the recommended dose by the manufacturer then half it again and you will be nearer to what you need to use and have no problems with your washing machine

What quantity of soda crystals do people use with their powder and also, does anyone know if these crystals can also be used with tablets instead?

I make my own powder by grating soap, and adding soda crystals and a touch of borax. But also when I wash towels and cotton bedding, I boil wash and was told this more than anything helps keep the `plumbing` clear, since a lot of washing powders and even liquids tend to semi solidify if they aren`t subjected to heat to help dissolve them...apparently clogged plumbing is a side effect of our modern cool washes. :)
Once a week if you put your machine on a boil wash and use vinegar and bicarb in the drawer it`ll help keep it sweet. :)

Tablets have never ever stained my clothes when put inside the drum..Wouldn't even dream of putting it in the drawer!!! NOwadays use liquid though.

And my dishwasher definitely prefers Fairy dishwasher tablets.. I think Quantum finish is too harsh on glasses and stains them.

Red Doe I was also told to put washing machine at least couple of times a month on high temperature for the plumbing to be kep clear!!

I found my soap drawer was getting clogged and the conditioner drawer. I looked at the recommended amount and realised that I was using almost double, have now drawn a line around the cup for the minimum amount and alls fine. I have also diluted my conditioner as was using the concentrated and it just kept gunking up and the drawer was constantly filled with water. Has done the job for me.
