Can you try for an IT related call cwntre job? eg something like 1st line support for Dell or similar ("have you checked it's plugged in?"). Then you can move on to second and third line...

If you need customer service or telephone experience to get a foot in the door try
    - Oxfam etc shops
    - does your college/uni/school use former grads to call alumni for donations? (mine does, it's bloody annoying)

  • mfboss - where are you? If you're in London, I can give you the email address of our graduate recruiter. We've got quite a range of IT roles (Healthcare IT) and none of them involve call centres...

Thanks for the tips Astaroth :)

I thought about doing voluntary work..as long as they pay my travel :D
Is it best to apply (for voluntary work) directly to whatever organisation, or scour the job sites?

yeah 1st line support is what I want and then move onto 2nd line etc.. I've been applying for these with no luck, so I'm taking a step back and apply for these when I have more skills and experience.

    ringo, yes I'm from London.

Some voluntary groups will pay your travel (any charity ought to, if they need volunteers, but may wait for you to ask for expenses!)

I wouldn't personally look for voluntary opportunities through jobs pages: the two roles are usually quite different. But there is almost certainly a voluntary services council for your part of London - ask at your local Library or google it - and they may have a 'volunteers wanted' register.

That way you will get experience, and you will get references. And hopefully have some fun as well.

As others have said, agencies are another good way of getting work without having to re-write your cv every time, and without the hassle of covering letters. But they'll want references as well - your uni tutor, or failing that confirmation that you studied there when you say you did! Also think about family friends or other professionals who might give you a character reference.

If you spent the summers working for your parents company then you have had a job. Hopefully your parents company has an actual name and a different trading address than where you currently live so there would be no need to mention that it happened to be owned by your parents.
