Pension from past job

In my last job, with marks and spencers, i recieved a (very small) pension. now i have left and moved to a job with the council and put into their pension scheme. i dont think i can add my old pension into the council scheme as it is a private one. does anyone know if i can cash it in as its only small, im only young and could use it to pay my debts off?

  • You should be able to transfer the pension into the LGPS SCheme, but do it soon as it can get sticky after 12 months goes by. Talk to your LGPS scheme administrators (your HR dept will give you the contact No.).

You cannot cash the pension in.

I'm in the LGPS and it is a good scheme, althought they are looking to change it (much tooing & froing with employers & unions).

Whatever the outcome it is still certain to be a very good scheme compared to a lot of schemes and it certainly beats schemes that are solely reliant on your money growing on the stock market in a private pension..
