We had our wedding at the Britannia Adelphi in Liverpool.

They dropped our wedding cake, covered it in bar fruit and claimed it came like that (since we brought it to them and it was made by my aunt we knew they were lying, plus the mark where they'd dropped it was on the tablecoth they hadn't bothered to replace).

They didn't bother with the red carpet.

They refused to allow our guests access to the venue and made them sit in the lobby.

We'd asked that the room be wheelchair accessible , they assured us it would be and it wasn't.

They had no system to play music with and when it arrived they chained it to the wall as though someone were planning to steal it.

They charged our guests for soft drinks (although we'd asked that they all be put on a tab), then charged me for them anyway.

We'd ordered wine for the meal, they didn't put it on the tables and it took two hours to arrive.

This wine was paid for in advance; they charged it to my credit card without permission the day after the wedding and refused to refund it.

They rushed us out, taking the tablecloths off the tables while guests were still sitting. This was three hours before our room hire time was up.

One of the waitresses propositioned a friend of mine in no uncertain terms. She threatened him when he turned her down on the grounds that he's gay.

They refused to serve the cake when we asked them to because it was during the speeches and "they wanted to listen".

There were serious health and safety concerns with the food.

Our hotel room was dirty and unheated in February. They brought us a space heater when we asked, but while we were sleeping they took it away.

My BIL borrowed an iron and they refused to return his £10 deposit but couldn't give a reason why.

They have never yet responded to my complaint.

    I recommend going elsewhere :)

Not a penny, they completely ignored my complaint. And the second, and the third times I sent it.

Have you tried the Head Office, or threatening them with WatchDog? Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience.

Oh my God, that's awful!!!!

Keep on at them, whatever you do, don't let it drop!

They're behaviour was appauling, I can't believe some of the things they did ~ good luck with getting some compensation from them.

P.S. Anything they charged to your CC that you had already paid for, get onto the CC company and see if you can do a chargeback.

Head Office also ignored my first letter, and my second and are currently ignoring my third. We're outside the UK so Watchdog aren't interested.

We did, they responded to the chargeback by saying my husband had authorised it, and although it was a single-user account and he had no right to authorise anything on it (and didn't in any case) the bank said we had to pursue it a different way. And since we don't live in the UK our options are limited, so we had a bad experience and are down over £100 on twice-bought wine. AND the wine wasn't what I'd asked for and was crap.

After our experience of a 'Christmas break' in a Britannia Hotel last Christmas, we'd never recommend this group of hotels to anybody.

In addition to us, travelling independently, there were 6 coaches-full of mainly elderly/disabled people. A 4-storey hotel with a working lift only to the 2nd floor, and this broke down on Christmas Day leaving NO lifts at all for all those people! They should have known that lifts would be essential, not an optional extra.

Very unhealthy breakfasts, quantity preferred before quality. Not what's expected in the modern world. I asked for yoghurt and was told 'we don't do it'.

    I could go on, but I won't.
