need help re credit card debts

Please please i dont want critizism, im at wits end, i have suffered a huge bereavment, and several other major issues in past few years. I have almost taken my own life several times, i am now under a phsyciatrist, mental health team and go to physcology, but in the meantime have run up a huge amount of debt and am scared. I have been put on long term sick and i could just about cover my card payments but they now seem to have gotten out of hand, example one card i owe 4000 to and the min payment is £105 and the interest is £103 a month, its spiralled. To cut to the chase i want to know what my options are. I am a homeowner and have 2 small children, im single and am currently recieving help toward my mortgage. Im scared of bankruptcy as i feel they will then take my home, what can i do im so scared and its makin me worse, i just think it would be better if i was not here:(

Things WOULD NOT be better if you were not here.....think of yourself and your children - the rest is just money and can be sorted given a little time.

Bankruptcy is not the only way to resolve things, you can have an IVA or do your own debt management plan or best yet get some valuable advice from the debt charities who dont charge and will help give some peace of mind (sticky at the top of the page).

Most on this board have had major debt, well done on taking the first step. Others will have better advice as Im not an expert but please stay and spend some time getting some support from the boards....

I refuse to be afraid of the big bad wolf, spiders, or debt collection agencies; one of them's not real and the other two are powerless without my fear.
(Ok, one of them is powerless, spiders can be nasty.)

As of the last count I have cleared
    [STRIKE]23.16%[/STRIKE] 22.49% of my debt. :(

Rather than talking about the different options available, you should sit down and fill out an SOA. http://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html This will show us what options are not just available but are suitable. IVAs generally require you pay it £x a month so you do need a decent enough income.

If you have children then the sale of the house in bankruptcy is a bit of a grey area, and tends to be on a case by case basis.

Hi you have done the first good thing and that is coming here where there are loads of nice and helpful people. One thing that might be helpful is that there should be a social worker attached to the mental health team - they are usually really helpful and can put you in touch with local support and debt advice so ask to speak to them.

It might be hard but find your local MIND office and give them a ring. They can be a really helpful resources for people with mental health and debt issues.

    You will get there!

Thank you, Ive been plodding away for 6 years, the time passes so quickly!

Im not well versed on the different options to be honest... I would go with Dark Convicts suggestion first of all....and certainly spend some time reading the stickies at the top...

You will find people totally supportive and many with first hand experiences :D

Keep posting and GOOD LUCK :)

  • First of all no amount of debt is worth ending your life over.

Your children are way more important than money.

hi there, im a psychological therapist and around here we have a charity called julian housing which can help those who have mental health issues get out of debt, find housing etc.dont know if you have that sort of thing where you are,but worth checking.not sur eif mind can help in the way the other poster has stated...but dont quote me on that. The next time you feel down and at the point of considering suicide, there should be a crisis number that you can call who can talk to you and come out to do an assessment.failing that, you can present yourself at a&e for assessment.there is a difference between not wanting to be here and having nothing to stop you and not wanting to be here but thinking of your children.(protective factors)I would also talk to your mental health team as they need to know exactly how you feel so they can help you.you are nt alone in this.millions of people are in debt and as a previous poster said, your life and children are far more important than your debt.good luck xx
