Strappy dresses - too much cleavage?

I'm 5'4", and have just tried on a number of size 10 dresses.
They're nice and summery and cool, but am I the only one to find that the straps need shortening (there isn't a built in facility, so I'm going to have to figure out a way of sewing it up)?

Sitting here in a nice simple Jasper Conran sundress I'm just trying on, and the top of the dress is below the horizontal bra strap, and that simply cannot be the design intention! Or am I just totally outdated on fashion?

Below the back bra strap? That is very low, but I too have to shorten the straps on many dresses as well as take them in under the arms as well!

I have the same problem as I'm only 5 feet tall, I have to shorten the straps onall my dresses. I think they design clothes for really tall models.....

Oh cool. Someone with experience of this.
Yes, it's below the front and back bra strap.
Ummm, may I ask how you shorten the straps, please?

Hard to explain without showing you but I usually do it from the back, tucking the excess into the back of the dress sort of thing.
one dress I have I just tie a knot in the straps at the shoulder part..

I do mine the same way, just tuck it in at the back and stitch.

Don't forget to pin it first and try it on. Ive made that mistake before.

Saw a lovely Per Una dress the other week, had the same problem and I am 5' 6". Bought some M&S tshirts today - they are going back cos they are just TOO LOW CUT.

Yes, everything shows my bra strap at the back and at the front they're indecent! I appreciate that I have a large bust to accomodate but I really don't want to show it to everyone but then a strappy top underneath defeats the object.

    I'm 5'5.

Talking of things not cut right, why do so many strappy tops and dresses straps not correspond with your bra straps? As most bras sit in the same position regardless of make why the discrepency in the outer clothes?

I always find tops and dresses to come really low, I'm not short either (5ft 6). Strappy tops are the worst-takes lots of trying on in different shops to get them to fit me right.
